cmos battery question

would a dead cmos battery prevent a comp from booting - cant even get it to post?

I don't think so it would only cause BIOS to reset when the power is turned off.

what i thought to, ty temeteus! i think the mb is toast but it was the only remaining thing i could thimk of besides the psu... wich is on the way.

how old this battery is?? Since they usually last around 5 to 6 years...

You can boot a machine with or without the battery installed. It just means that if you pulled the plug, or turned of the switch on the PSU cutting power to the board that the CMOS would reset to default settings.

Posting issues can occur due to a couple things: the board is toast, psu is toast, ram is fried or not seated properly, CPU is fried, has missing or bent pin/s, or is not seated properly, the PSU is set to the wrong voltage (say you live in North Am, and the PSU is set to 230 and not 115 which it should be, and which, coincidentally, I just "repaired" a clients machine for that very reason), or some other device or component in the machine is stopping it from posting.

Basically, it could be anything, so you need to be systematic when you go through things.
