Motherboard update
I have a Presario v5245eu, AMD turion641.8Ghz, DDR 1.5Gb Ram at 333Mhz, 120gb hdd.
My CPU has a FSB of 400Mhz but my Ram has a FSB of 333Mhz, is there anyway I can update the bios on my laptop mother board to so my RAM can run at the same speed as my CPU. So in effect speeding up my whole system a little bit.
As I am running vista any improvement would be welcome.
Can this be done? if so how and where do I find what I need to do this?

FSB differences are a hardware issue and if it can't be adjusted in the BIOS it can't run at said speed.
look on your manufacturer's website under your laptop model for an up to date BIOS and max supported memory frequency.

Hi Greenman!!!
There was a BIOS update March 2007 to version F.54. It is for Vista but not for Vista x64 I think. It doesn't say whether the new version alters the max memory frequency.
I advise you email HP Compaq with your support question.

i suggest getting a new laptop, you just can't game with that low end model. of course there are other ways to improve performance but games aren't going to look any prettier.

Not sure that he wants it for games.
Anyhow, this is what the BIOS F.54 is for:
Quote:
Description
This package contains the WinFlash utility and a BIOS image. The WinFlash utility is used to locally flash the System BIOS (ROM) on notebooks operating in a Microsoft Windows environment.
PURPOSE: Recommended
Fixes
Resolves Quick Launch Button issue where the "Q" and "DVD" buttons do not work when running a Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System.
Operating system(s): Microsoft Windows XP, Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit), Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Media Center, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
|
So I guess it won't help. Sorry.

Yeah I do like gaming and I do want to game with it. But my main purpose is for my university work. But as I am a uni student I cant really afford to go out and buy a new laptop. So I am trying to find ways of improving this pile of junk as best I can so I can at least play games on it.
So when I am sick of learning about algae, I can kill things instead, so any help on how to improve the performance on my laptop would be helpful.
So thanks for your help
EDIT: I do have ATI tools for over clocking my video card, but I dont know the safe level of how much my card can be over clocked with out screwing it up.

like i said before YOU DON'T HAVE A TRUE GRAPHICS CARD IN YOUR LAPTOP!
im not even sure that ATitool will run properly on there.... you're welcome to try though...

Yup its integrated GFX on your mobo alright.
The main improvement you could do is to have the max 2GB on your mobo in dual channel and to update all your mobo/chipset drivers. There are new drivers for sound and GFX that may improve things. Use the link I gave in this thread or the ATI thread.
Good luck!!

I know, I do understand what you are saying that my video card is not a real card, but there are probably more than one way of increasing the speed of a laptop. And yes ATI Tools does work on my GFX card, but I do not know the safe limit at which it could be over clocked. As it is Laptop I dont really want to mess it up. However I do know that clock speeds are well under the limit at which they were designed to run at so they could last longer. But I really dont fancy having this laptop for 10 years.
What I was hoping more than anything, (maybe I should have pointed it out better), was that HP are using another manufactures motherboard or components, just with hp branding all over it. And if this is the case what would it be and would I find out? ( I am not very good at this sort of stuff) Then I would replace the bios that HP supplied with the one from the actual manufacturer as the chances are this will be better supported. But I don't know if it is possible.
I am new to this kind of stuff and exploring every route I can possibly take and looking at things from every angle. Not even you know everything....... like you didnt know that ATI tools does work for my fake video card. So please don't use caps on me ok.....

Yeah I am planning to upgrade to 2Gb of Ram and will probably get PC3200 as it runs at 400Mhz and is backwards compatable with my MB. I already have 1Gb of PC3200 RAM already. So I know it works.... just seeing if there was anything I could do to make my Laptop recognise the 400Mhz bus speed rather than the 333Mhz which it runs at. As I know on some motherboards an updated BIOS can allow the MB to use the higher bus speed.

if there is no native support for DDR 400 then it won't run at those speeds, but you can reduce the latencies from the default 3-3-3-8 to something of 2.5-3-3-8 to increase performance a bit depending on the capabilities of the memory. try setting it at 2-3-3-6 if you feel like risking it.
i SERIOUSLY don't like the idea of trying to overclock a Integrated graphics chip, not only is it not equipped to take the stress, if done, you run the risk of COMPLETELY KILLING YOUR SYSTEM PERMANENTLY, it is also your northbridge chip, the central connecting bridge in a computer between any and all components connected to a motherboard, replacing it is not as simple as buying a new one, the entire motherboard needs to be changed.
