Problem with CDROM Drives setup

my mobo has 4 ide cable plugs, 2 are designated the usual primary and secondary, and the other two are supposed to be for raid but also work as regular ide ports. Because i'm at college and too lazy to get jumpers my ide configuration is like this:
primary ide - 20 gig master, 40 gig slave
secondary - DVD drive
primary RAID - CDR drive

whenever I access either cd drive, i get horrible system slowdown, such as my sound craps out, my mouse stutters, etc. Anyone have a better suggestion for my configuration so i can fix this when i go home?

this probably isnt the ideal setup...but awhile back i used to run 2 hdds on the raid channels (just enable ata in the bios to boot from one of them) and toss the optical drives on your primary and secondary channels and put them both as master via their respective jumpers.

Yeah, I agree with sinjin. That should fix your problems.
