HELP(sm bus controller)

Hi all,

There seems to be a serious problem with my desktop, (not so sure
if it is a problem with hardware, software, driver or wutever).
This problem has been going on for a while for my desktop so I installed
windows xp multiple times, and I also had to install drivers when I install
windows xp.

So I install windows xp, and other drivers works fine, but whenever I
install the SM bus controller and I reboot as it saids I need to do that,
the blue screen of death comes up, and I am unable to boot to windows.
So I reboot and if I use to "Last known good configuration" i am able
to boot into windows and the question mark next to SM bus controller
remains.

I tried the drivers from the CD that comes with my motherboard, the
website for motherboard and other stuff but none of them work.

The motherboard is ASUS P5ND2-SLI NVIDIA nFORCE4-SLI intel edition.

Is this a hardware problem? or any idea on how to fix this?

Download drivers here : http://www.nvidia.com/object/nforce_...ntel_7.15.html
Then uninstall all nForce drivers then use driver cleanner to make sure that they are gone.

I just tried those drivers and I get the same result a blue screen so I just used Last known good configuration to get into windows the blue screen saids

UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME
0x000000ED (0x867C5E30, 0xC000009C, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)

Any idea on why this is happening and if it is a hardware which hardware is causing the problem?

That error can pop up due to either having a bad IDE cable (either improperly connected, bad, or damaged pins on one of the devices), damaged hard drive, but it can also occur if you've setup the bios to use ACHI or RAID, yet you didn't install the proper driver for your board during Windows installation. As temet has said, what type of hard drive do you have? IDE or SATA?

1) Double check the connections of all your IDE devices, making sure the cable is connected properly (red/white/blue stripe facing the power connector), as well as double checking to make sure there are no bent pins on them as well as the motherboard. Infact, if you can, try replacing the cable altogether. As a test I would also suggest disconnecting the IDE cables from the motherboard for those devices (all except the one connected to your bootup hard drive if you are using an IDE drive and not an SATA drive for it).

2) Double check the settings in the bios on how to handle SATA drives, or hard drives in particular. If you didn't install the ACHI or RAID drivers during installation, yet it is setup in the bios to run that way, then I would change the setting to run in PATA or compatible mode.

3) On another note, some more current DVD burners/readers require the 80 wire IDE cable to be used, and using any of the older, 40 pin cable can infact cause the system to become unstable (I found this out recently with the newest LG burner), or simpley not work when Ultra DMA is enabled within Windows. If you have an older, 40 pin cable attached to your optical drive, and it happens to be one manufacturered within the last couple months, then I would switch it to an 80 wire cable. ALSO, the opposite can be true as well. Most manufacturers give 1x80 wire cable, and that's it. Some older optical drives may not work with that cable, and as such you will need to switch it to the older 40 wire. Whatever you have, try using a different cable to see if that helps.

SMB controller driver should include with, or as a part of the motherboard/chipset drivers.
try checking the Asus forum for your motherboard model - http://vip.asus.com/forum/join.aspx?...odel=P5ND2-SLI to see if there is a known problem about installing the device's driver. or if it hasn't been asked before you may also want to ask them on how to properly install driver for the device.
