Network Card Missing

A buddy of mine called me over to help out with his computer the other day. He had some viruses and heaps of spyware. Helped him out with those, but heres an odd problem (at least I've never seen it b4). He cant get online sometimes, unless (he states) that he restarts the computer a fw times. I looked in his device manager after one restart and noticed that there was no listing for any "Network Adapters". It did however, connect to the net. Sometimes it will sometimes it wont, but the card is NEVER shown under the device manager. I took a look at it, reseated it and all the lights are working and so on. When it works, it works fine. It just works sporadically. And never shows up in device manager. Any ideas? I already suggested that he pick up a cheap nic and it does the same thing, so I'm thinking something with the motherboard? Its a Duron 900 with PC133SDRAM, so not a new machine. And no he cant upgrade right now. I'm asking out of interest.

Why not slap in a new network card... but I would suggest reformatting Windows, it sounds like the virii/spyware buggered up his machine

Probably the best choice. Hes got so many photos and video on it though. Not really a huge problem, i can move them onto an external drive. But how could windows connect without a network adapter installed? Weird. Its a cable modem btw.

It could be connecting and the hardware manager just doesn't show it. If its there physically and you can connect thats what happens

I havent had time to get back to that guys house yet, but a friend of mine suggested that it could be that windows is detecting the nic as something else and installing it as that. I do recall seeing an IRDA in the device manager and i know he doesnt have one installed. Ill try uninstalling it and forcing other drivers tomorrow. Will post with success or failure. Weird thing though.

Turned out his cable modem had gone out. He got a new one and all is fine.
