x700 mobility won't work!
Hello!
I got an Acer Aspire 5024 with an ATI mobility x700.
My first question:
1) is it necessary to have Service Pack 2 installed? Because I got SP1 and XP Pro and ATI says they "recommend" SP2.
2) I couldn't find an entry which says x700 mobility while installing, there are only x300 mobility and x600 mobility! Is this normal?
I got horrible Benchmark-Points while benchmarking the card with "SimonTools", it was about 1800.
I also checked the Catalyst which I was able to install via a mod, but although the driver is viewable with the correct date, the benchmark didn't go over 1800.
Will the x700 mobility be supported in the new version of Omega?
When will a new Omega-version be released?
Thank you!
Yours sincerely,
orffyre

Is the card supposed to be PCI-E? If so, you should really have SP2 installed as other mentioned. Otherwise, you can also use official ATI catalysts with a Mobility Modder without waiting for latest Omegas.

Yes, the card is PCI-Express. I already tried the modded version of the catalyst and there is also an entry, which says that the driver is with the date from 26.05.2005.
But this didn't solve my problem. I still got those few Benchmark-Points via "SimonTools" (1800)
Well, if you REALLY think the SP2 is necessary, I'll give it a try, but I don't really like this thing, cause I'm afraid my system will fuckup. We'll see...
When will the new Omegas be released? Is there already a date?
I will wait and try to install them on my system. If this doesn't seem to work out, I will download this SP2-mess.
Thanx anyway.

Yes, I already tried to install the new Omegas, but there is STILL NO entry for the radeon mobility x700!!!
Why is that!? There is x300 and x600 mobility ONLY. Also, I gave up the chance that my XP without SP2 has ANY clue what is meant with PCI-Express, though I think this is the problem. Is PCI-E only supported since SP2????
I still got the inf-problem: When I try to install the Omegas via the Menu, there comes the error: "no inf found" "try installing vga-driver first!" But the truth is that these are already installed.
THis ATI-problem starts to make me sick; I got an nvidia 6600 gt on my desktop, I NEVER, really NEVER had such problems while installing a simple driver for a graphix-card. I will not recommend ATI in any kind of way, I had no choice in the notebook-area.
wtf

1) i don't think omegas have the x700 MR right now (i dunno why)
2) As far as drivers, try these (they are the official Mobility Drivers) or again try the Mobility Modder with standard Cats from ATi, I know for an absolute fact that these work (I have tried them both on my x700 MR for the 5.7s)
3) Don't blame ATi, this isn't their fault, the driver issue is because to reduce the possibility of hardware issues they let the manufacturers issue driver sets (since manufacturers can disable or enable features of the card for their particular system so even though those of us who like to keep on the cutting edge with drivers are unhappy, the whole driver thing could be a good thing from the right perspective, plus ATi is starting to issue Mobility Drivers that actually install on most systems). As far as any SP2/PCI-Express issues, that is also not an ATi issue, but it might very well be true that you need SP2 to utilize PCI-Exp fully since PCI-Exp is newer that XP is, besides chances are you won't see any issues at all (most issues were on the business side with their speciallized software), and many of the upgrades in SP2 were very important upgrades for laptops (better wireless networking, massive improvement there, better security, and a decent firewall), so I consider upgrading to SP2 a NEED to do upgrade anyway wether you have PCI-Exp issues or not.

@yoda: I can not agree with you on the "this isn't their fault"-issue, because they are the manufacturers of these cards and they say that they are "20 years in bizz", so they should know about the "manufacturer-of-laptop-and-they-provide-driver"-thing.
cause you know and i know that they don't really care about driver-updates and it remains the problem of the users/programmers.
As I already said and I don't want to be seen as a stan of nvidia BUT I already saw how it CAN work! And what ATI makes there is a simple mess!
I already tried the "ATI-Mobility-Checkup" and it said that Catalyst won't be compatible on my particular notebook. Although I was able to install the modded version and the driver had an actual date, but that was it. No good benchmarking there.
The PCI-Express thing is something that came into my mind a few days before and I really agree with you on the fact that xp is older than this interface. I always had AGP before.
Phew. I really don't like this SP-thing cause I think it WILL propably mess something up. I could bet on it. But I'll give it a try. And I don't think that the "Security center" will have massive improvements on my security and the firewall is crap; use ZoneAlarm, if you want to use a "real" software-firewall!
Thanx anyway.

not the monility checkup bs, that isn't right, mine says the same thing, but try that link I gave you, it goes to the mobility drivers itself, not that test prog, I think they didn't update the test prog from the previous version (5.6)
And I've heard both good and bad things about zone alarm, but that's in another thread here at DH (i don't remember which one)
Also, don't compare ATi on the Laptop to Nvidia on the Desktop as far as drivers and all, they aren't the same, ATi supplies all the drivers for the desktop, its just that for laptops manufacturers will sometimes disable actually important features to save power or reduce customer support issues, and the fact that the laptop companies have horrid driver updating programs is not ATis fault, however again ATi is trying to work out a solution for this with the mobility drivers (5.7s are their second attempt), and if they didn't care they wouldn't be releasing new drivers every 3 or 4 weeks with massive improvements for gaming.
And Last, try benchmarking with 3DMark03 or 05, and maybe a game or 2 (HL2 or Doom3 if you have em, they stress the system well, cause I've been benchmarking for a relatively long time and I have never heard of simon tools, and I thought I've heard of all of the good benchmarks. Plus since everyone knows those ones I named we can tell you if you are off from what you should be, with simon we don't have a clue, cause we haven't used them.

I will try the driver via your link-tip tomorrow, cause I'm at work and need my usb-stick for that.
I'll try it out, but thought that I already snooped the hell out of this ATI-site, so I couldn't find a direct link to that file.
Hmmm. We'll see. I also got this Sp2 now, I hope it will work and I will post how I solved the problem WHEN IT'S DONE.
C ya.

Hello!
Well, I installed SP2 but the problem still exists. I installed the mobility driver you gave me with the link also, but I get
621 points with 3dmark05 !!!
It's horrible. What now? I really have NO idea left.
I start hating ATI. My Notebook works well, except this ugly problem with one of the best mobile graphics cards on the planet.
Greetings,
orffyre

hmm...I don't know what the issue is, I take it that you have the same problems in real apps as well (games). You might want to call your computer company, cause you should get higher than that in 3dmark05, I get over 2,000. How do your specs compare to mine (in my siggy), good luck.

The CPu is 64bit, but my XP is 32bit and so are the programs. Could it be that this will cut down my results in the benchmark-tests!? Is there a patch or something?
I tested Doom 3 yesterday and it was quite good looking. I also could imagine that PCI_Express isn't detected automatically. I don't have other ideas left.
