Problem with new omega drivers on mobility 9600
I have been running an older version of Omega's drivers on my ATI mobility 9600 Raedon and recently updated to his new ones. When the computer rebooted everything was choppy and I could not run my games. I read his faq and attempted to use the smartgart feature but could not find the control panel that was referred to in the faq. I clicked on the advanced smartgart option in my start menu but nothing happened.
After omega's drivers started screwing up I uninstalled them and all the associated programs, ran driver cleaner pro and attempted to install the drivers put out for my video card by alienware. When I try to install the latest catilyst drivers for it I get a message that says: "Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software."After this, I tried to install the other drivers put out by alienware and I get one of two messages about halfway through setup each time I try it: "INF Error: Video Driver not found"So after all of this I uninstalled the device and tried to reinstall it with the drivers that came on the cd from the factory but that does not work. The hardware wizard says: "An error occured during the instillation of this device. Access is denied."I ran a dxdiag just to see what it would say and this is what happened: "---------------I'm pretty stumped and really have no idea what to do now. I tried going through ATI's customer service but they pointed me back to alienware and back to here. If anybody has any ideas I would really appreciate your help. Thanks |

If you want to force a driver install go to the control panel, system, hardware, device manager, display adapters, (right click) update driver, not at this time, specific location (advanced), dont search, (your default driver might apear here, if you want this, install, if you want higher performance continue or if it does not appear continue), have disk, browse (go to C:\ATI\SUPPORT\(driver version here)\driver, choose either .ini file then select 9800 series from the list and it next, let it install and hope that solves your problem.
If you have nothing in c:\ati or only old versions try downloading and installing the latest 5.4s from ATI, it will unpack then the installation will say you dont have the right chip, but it unpacks it already so use the ini file from that.

Thanks for replying so fast Meaker but your advice did not work. When I tried to do what you said, it threw up a message that said: "An error occured during the instillation of this device. Access is denied."

Is it a laptop with interchangeable graphics modules because when that happened with one of mine the GPU had shook partly loose when the ground rose up to quickly and attacked it (at least thats what I told the insurer). Failing that try downloading regular Cats and modding them with Patje's wonderful modder. If that fails try installing in safe mode or rolling back to a date when the system operated. If those dont work let me know and i'll rack my brain for something else.

Thanks for the advice Lelisevis. Unfortunately, it did not work. Patje's modder was able to mod the cats (both the most recent 5.4 and an older version as well) for my card but when I tried to install them it gave the message:
"Setup was unable to find components that can be installed on your current hardware or software configuration. Please make sure you have the required hardware or software." I tried rolling back the drivers but it did not work. I also tried restoring to every point before I installed the drivers but every time when the computer restarts it says that it was unable to restore the computer and that no changes have been made. |

Last thing you want to hear but I honestly believe your GPU has given up the ghost. It looks like it's not even detecting the graphics hardware though im questioning this myself as you still have a display. Still im willing to hedge my bets and say it's a hardware issue which is going to mean at least you'll get to find out if Alienwares warranty is up to scratch.
Before that though please let me know if the actual hardware unit has became disconnected or has a flaky connection. User manual should tell you what to check. Take a look at my website for pointers on what to look for http://www.laptopshowcase.co.uk/reviews.php?id=45 if hard linking is forbidden then I apologise and will accept mods deleting my reply.

Thanks for the help lelisevis but I opened up my laptop but I could not find out where the GPU should be. I guess its time to contact alienware and see what they have to say. Again, thanks for your help.

I believe there was a problem with all drivers starting at CAT 4.6 that made it so MR 9600 cards wouldnt play video properly. I never did find out if that problem was ever resolved. You might want to try the Omega Driver 2.544 based on CAT 4.5. That is the one I am stuck with using.

Does Alienware provide any drivers for that particular laptop? If so - check what device ID is listed in the driver .inf file, and then tell it to us, and we can possible hand modify a driver set for you to install yourself.
Since your older driver worked just fine with the laptop, I am guessing it's more of a non-standard device ID, and unlikely a hardware failure.

I looked through the drivers provided but I haven't been able to find a driver.inf or driver.ini file. I'm gonna go through and look harder this weekend to see if I can find anything else.

it will not be called driver.inf. It will be a cXXXXX_xp.inf or cXXXXX_2k.inf file. Sorry for confusing you

In the driver directory there is a folder named "2KXP_INF" with the files "C2_17944" and "CX_17944" in it. Are either one of these files the one I should be looking in? Windows XP has classified both as "setup information" files.

I'll go ahead and post some of what I found in the file, hopefully its what we need:
;-----------------------------------------------Also, a quick question, would flashing the BIOS help at all? Hopefully, somebody here wil be able to help me figure this out cause I called alienware again today and they gave me the finger and said that they can't give me any tech support or sell me a new card because my warranty has expred. |

Thanks for the pastes
Now I need one more thing from you - open "regedit", navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} There you will see a set of "folders" starting with 000, we need the "matchingDeviceID" value from there, it will look like this: "pci\ven_1002&dev_5159" Paste it here, and we can custom mod a file for you.

I went to the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E968-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder in regedit and there were two folders inside of it "0000" and "properties". Neither of these folders expands into any further branches. The only thing in each folder is: "Name: Default / type:REG_SZ / Data:Value Not Set". I cant find anything that says "matchingDeviceID" inside of either of these folders.

Ok, let's try a proven entry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum\P CI\VEN_1002&DEV_XXXXXXXXXX (there should be 2 of these for dual head cards). Give us the full names of VEN_1002&DEV....., nothing else needed.

Ok, looks like the inf file of the driver you are using already contains all the necessary things. Let's try this:
1. Uninstall anything ATI from control panel (Omega drivers, ATI drivers - anything). You do not have to reboot for each separate uninstall, even when prompted. 2. Install DriverCleaner Pro and run Internet-Updates. 3. Download the version of the drivers you are planning to use to your hard drive. If you choose official Catlyst drivers, make sure you download DH Mobility Modder 2.2 4. Now reboot, and tap F8, and when prompted choose Safe Mode (if you are on a domain, choose Safe Mode with Networking). During login, you should be prompted to install drivers - do not click next, until after step 5, just leave it open for now 5. When logged in in safe mode, run DriverCleaner Pro and clean everything ATI, exctept IGP parts. You can now click thrugh the dialog from step 4, make sure you choose "Do not connect to the internet" from the radio list. 6. Reboot into normal mode, and install the drivers of your choice. If it still prompts about unknown hardware - try to force it as described by Meaker above.

I tried everything you said and whenever I do it I get the message saying ""Setup was unable to complete the installation. Try to setup your display adapter with a standard VGA driver before running setup."
Whenever I try to force an installiation like Meaker told me to do I get a message during the installiation that says "An error occured during the instillation of this device. Access is denied." |

Alienware posted a message on their forum about a day ago that told me to uninstall the agp and video drivers, reseat the card and then reinstall everything. This did not help and the hardware wizard failed, as usual, displaying the usual:
"An error occured during the instillation of this device. Access is denied." message. I don't know if this will help you diagnose the problem Redsolar, but well see if it will. Any ideas on why access to the device is denied? |

hmmm, well, since it's been quite some time troubleshooting this, have you tried completely reinstalling the OS yet? Sometimes it helps to do something more drastic. Or is it not an option?

PatriotGOP, I would suggest imaging the whole drive, copying it elsewhere and then reinstalling, and only messing with the drivers for some time. Then if it still does not solve the problem, you can revert back to your current setup quickly.

I fixed the problem by reinstalling windows, installing the ati drivers from alienware, deleting the ati control panel and installed omega's newest drivers. I hope this helps anybody else having the same problems that I did. A big thanks to redsolar for all the help that he has given me, I appreciate it.
