System fonts shrinking after upgrade -- Help?

I'm upgrading a Radeon 9600 to modded Catalyst drivers to allow 1600x1200 viewing with a Thinkpad T42. Original IBM Radeon drivers do not allow external DVI at 1600x1200 resolution. I am having numerous problems, but I'll try to fix them by reading old posts.

Current issue: With the identical settings as before, my system fonts (and other system related items) are noticably smaller than prior to the upgrade. I have a 1400x1050 LCD so I have slightly enlarged everthing to improve readablity (sorry, old eyes). System DPI set to 129%. Most items in Windows appearance tab increased slightly (i.e. Fonts to 9 vs 8). Strangely, fonts in Firefox appear unchanged.

I assume I can crank up the DPI setting if necessary -- but before I make all the changes, I'm wondering whether there is a more basic solution to the change in apparent resolution.
