Which drivers for Mobility Radeon 9700 M11?
Hi all,
I'm a graphics driver newbie, so I am just looking for some advice.
I have a widescreen Pegasus AMD-64 3400+ with Mobility Radeon 9700 M11 with 128 DDRAM. Unfortunately, drivers on it date back to 27th January 2004 (v6.14.10.6422), there is no Catalyst installed that I can see, and I found out that these two factors are main reasons why my Doom 3 keeps crashing and Halo won't even start. No matter which driver-catalyst bundle I download from www.ati.com, it fails with "(INF) error video driver not installed" or something. I even tried to modify the bundle with DH Mod tool V2.0b from http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/ but which gets rid of that error, but then it fails saying something like "you do not have supported video adapter installed".
Only yesterday I started learning about alternative drivers, and installed DNA 3.4.4.11, which fixed problematic games, but messed up video files playback. So I was thinking, are these new Omega drivers prone to similar problems as well? Do they install their version of Catalyst as well?
Also, I have read the post below about "official" ATI mobility drivers being available for a very short time on ATI's website. I'm almost sick from thinking that if I was several days faster, I could've got them. Any clues when will ATI release updated mobility drivers and the catalyst? I contacted my manufacturer and they said not before January or February, but I have a feeling he was telling me anything, just to get rid of me.
Sorry for the long post, but I would appreciate all suggestions? Should I wait? Or install this Omega release? Does it fix problems with Halo/Doom3, and have a Catalyst?
Thanks in advance

Omega's are usually better than DNA's so yeah install that.
Edit: To fix your video playback i suggest updating your BIOS

Wait and try the omega's remember to uninstall any sets you have now.
then use driver cleaner, reboot , the try the omega's see if those work for ya....
" Any clues when will ATI release updated mobility drivers and the catalyst?"
Well for certain not any time this year. You'll have to rely on your manufacturere.
you can try some othe moded sets but the omega's are the only ones (modified) approved of by ATI. Of course your urged to always and only to use offical ATI drivers
Laptops have allways ben natoruios for poor video driver support/updates. It's not ATI's fault but the fault of the MFG.

Give a try to Omegadrivers, indeed. Also, as Louiemaster vbmenu_register("postmenu_513696", true); said, check your vendor's web site and try to find any Bios updates for the video card. Halo and Doom 3 ran as heaven in my previous Mobility 9700 with Omegas and latest Bios update from Dell.

I have tried Omega's latest build, and as expected, Doom3 indeed runs sooo much better, but I'm still getting this damn problem with playback of AVI, MPG, ASF, DIVX files... same as with DNA drivers, I just can't believe it!!!
Just to be on the safe side, I did check whether WMV option was ticked, as the default suggested, and yes it was. Even so, the bloody video playback rbings the whole system down!
I would like so much to use this set of drivers, as indeed it seems to be miles ahead of my current ones, but I have to fix this video playback. Louiemaster, are you sure that updating BIOS would help at all? I've never done this before, and the laptop is brand new, so I'm a bit afraid of doing that. Aren't there any other things I could try?
Thanks

P.S. Any ideas why Patje's modder still doesn't make ATI's pack install on my card?

Thanks for the reply, and the encouraging news I thought it was me doing something stupid when the damn thing refused to install.
Only later have I noticed that there is a whole separate thread on your modder in the tools forum, the one "Modded catalysts for Mobility users". I will probably continue looking there, as I am only interested in Mobility and official catalysts, as Omega drivers screwed up my playback.

Have you tryed to install Windows Media Player 10?. If not, try it, install the latest Omegas, and try to watch your vids. Just in case

Hmmm, to be honest, no... I think that I've got v9. I don't think it'll make much difference, as I've tried it through WMV, BSPlayer Pro, MV2 Player, Winamp, MicroDVD, and loads of people here complained about PowerDVD...
But never hurts to try. I'll give it a shot when I get home.
Cheers

I've heard somewhere that newest ati drivers included some kind of video-playback optimizations using ATI hardware (mainly related to WMV-format, but you never know), but these optimizations relied upon some Operating System components that were installed only by MediaPlayer v10. Once WMP10 is installed on your system, you should be able to watch videos, but not only through WMP, but also from any other player as well...
Good luck!!!

Nope, didn't work. GOt home, noticed that Patje finished a new modder for ATI drivers, installed Catalyst 4.12, and the same problem again!
Then I just flashed BIOS with an upgrade from manufacturer website, and everything is OK now Video files playback is working sweet!

If Clevo doens't have them on their website, your chances are limited. You could contact their support trough email perhaps to ask if they have a newer bios available.

I have also got a Clevo Notebook (D400K) and the same Problem.
Only the old catalyst dating june 2004 from the clevo website works.
But I detected something strange:
When I try to start a video with media player, it doen's play the video only the sound.
When I try to shut the media player down it crashed.
But when I dont' exit media player I am able to play videos correctly with other players.
The same is for other players:
when I start winamp and i doesn't play the video, i am able to play videos with for example the media player.
But always when I try to shut the programm, that i started first which doesn't play the video, the notebook crashes.

I got the same problem! I got a machine called Medion CAD2000 here in Norway, could be the same machine with a different name here. EDIT: After some research I've found another name for my laptop/mainboard: D470k, so I guess they are related somehow.
Specs: VIA K8T800(M) chipset, AMD64 3000+, 1024mb 400mhz Kingston RAM (modified), ATI Radeon Mobility 9700 M11 128mb (manufacture clocked at 470/270 -stable)
Here is what I have found out: Cant play ANY videos with Omega drivers. Sometimes after a reinstall back to the standard drivers, its the same problem.
But if I turn of DirectDraw functions, it's all fine. My DirectX version is 9c and I've tried to repair it, but it just completes without doing any changes and everything appears fine in the dxdiag.
So for now I play games with DirectDraw on and turn it off everytime I want to play movies.
A final solution woul be greatly appriciated. I hate swithcing all the time, and I havent tested if games that require DirectDraw/Direct3D works 100%
Someone please help!!
Oh I just found this post :

UPDATE!!!
In case anyone cares, I dled latest Winamp, and in preferences/video
uncheck Allow hardware video overylay.
I know have latest omega/atis working so WoW plays fine AND video playback is fine.
Tested in on My Chemical Romance mpg and a halfbaked divx.
|
Though this only solves playback in winamp and some says there are still issues with DVD-playback..
