Help With HD 4570 Driver

I recently used Driverheaven's mobility modder to mod ATI's latest Display driver (9.9). I did this because I was attempting to play a game in DX10 but couldn't; I kept getting a message saying my display drivers were out of date and I needed atleast version 9.4.

It worked, or so I thought. I no longer get that message when I try to play the game, but the game runs terribly (15 FPS on low settings >_>). I knew it wasn't my system specs because I have a Core 2 Duo 2.4ghz 8600 processor, 4gb or ram and an ATI HD 4570, which are all over the recommended settings for this game. So I went to my dxdiag, and it says that my display drivers are version 8.5, not 9.9. My old driver was version 7.5, so the Mobility modder did do something, just not what I wanted it to..lol.

So why did it upgrade to 8.5 instead of 9.9 when 9.9 was what I downloaded from ATI's site? And how can I get it to update to 9.9?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Help With HD 4570 Driver

That's normal. ATI gives each driver release a public name by the month they were published, for example, 9.9 means September 2009. On the other hand, the internal version is different than that, and that's what you see in DXDiag. They probably do that because when you see 9.9, you know exactly what driver-set you're dealing with, but when you read 8.5.xxx it's hard to remember when it was released.

What game are you playing? Many games are much more demanding in DX10 then DX9 and the GPU you have isn't bad, but I wouldn't call it a gaming solution so it could be too much for it (it's half way between desktop Radeon 2400 and 2600).

Re: Help With HD 4570 Driver

The game is Age of Conan. It's weird because everywhere I checked said my PC was above reccommended settings. I went to some system scanner and it even said my system could run Crysis above reccommended as well, that's why I find it so weird that I can't even run low settings smoothly..

Re: Help With HD 4570 Driver

Well, I Googled out this thread on AoC official forum and, as far as I could see, getting a big performance hit when enabling DX10 is, unfortunately, normal. I didn't read it entirely as it's rather long, but you should be able to find some useful tips about optimizing DX10 performance in there.

Also, your GPU belongs to the until recently latest generation so it can run any game, but it's not very fast as it's got only 80 stream processors. For comparison, the desktop Radeon 4670 has 320 of them, 4850 has 800 (that's ten times more!) and the latest 5870 has 1600 SPs. Those last cards would be an overkill for 1280*800 (which is what I'm guessing your laptop's screen resolution is), but AoC in DX10 is apparently a very demanding game, so I don't think that you'll be able to make it fly on a Radeon Mobility 4570.

Re: Help With HD 4570 Driver

Alright, thanks a lot for the help. I did hear somewhere that dell laptops were able to have their GPUs upgraded since they aren't soldered on to the motherboard or something, do you know anything about that? If this is true, where could I look online for laptop GPUs?

Re: Help With HD 4570 Driver

I really wish someone else jumped in, my knowledge about these things is limited and purely theoretical. Dell is listed among adopters on MXM Graphics Module, but I was unable to find any MXM modules (or any kind of laptop graphics cards) on Dell's web site, while some which I found on other sites clearly stated "not compatible with any Dell laptop" (also, some web pages claim that Dell uses proprietary modules and that none of their laptops are MXM compatible).

First it's best that you check what exactly does your laptop have, a soldered card, a proprietary "Dell slot" or MXM, and then I hope someone will be able to point you to what you need.
