Sad Strange black artifacts all over white areas in Vista Media Center video playback?

Hi there,

you're really my last hope on this matter. I do have a FSC Amilo M1424 Laptop running as my "media pc" to watch movies etc. in my living room. It's running Vista Ultimate and everything works fine - except playing back videos in Vista Media Center.

The Problem:
Playing MPG/DIVX/XVID in Media Center gives me black artifacts in all bright white areas.
But:
  • Playing the same files in Media Player 11 works great!
  • Playing a DVD in Media Center works great!
A sample:
I blogged about it some time ago and also attached a video of how it looks like. This is a screenshot of the problem:

The setup:
FSC Amilo M1424 Laptop, running an ATI Mobility Radeon 9700SE (Widescreen display)
Vista Ultimate (with latest Windows and Media Center Updates)
Combined Community Codec Pack (latest version)

The drivers and previous troubleshooting:
Here's my problem now:
  • I've tried nearly every driver available.
Neither Vista default drivers nor the latest catalyst drivers (installed with the mobility modder) do change anything.
  • It doesn't matter if I have my TV attached (via RGB) or run Media Center only on the LCD
  • It doesn't matter if Media Center runs in Fullscreen or in Windowmode.
  • It doesn't matter if I change the color palette for either my LCD or the TV
  • It doesn't matter which codecpack I use to display DIVX/XVID/MPG2
  • Fresh install of Vista Ultimate didn't fix it either
I'm all open for your ideas!

Cool! Solution to your problem..Hope it works...You can solve it...Just Believe

Step1: I installed Vista codec package, the problem with black artifacts started to show in MC.
Step 2: I uninstalled Vista Codec Package and installed K-lite Mega codec pack., problem not resoloved.
Step 3: I updated my windows and installed latest Ati catalyst drivers with avivo, the package contained Visual C++ which did the trick from the ATI Download Website.
Step 4: Restarted the system and voila it worked...Thank you God!!!

I hope it works and you enjoy the full potential of Vista Media Center.

Adios,
Neo

Hi neo,

thanks for the steps, but they did not work out for me. Which latest catalyst driver do you mean? WinXP, WinXP MCE, Win2000, Vista? "Normal" ones or mobility drivers?

Did you mean the Avivo Driver package from AMD GAME Drivers and Utilities or what exactly?

I appreciate your help
