Need Help w/ Inspiron 1521 and x1270 on Vista

Hi guys, first post here but I didn't know where else to turn. I'll try to be as clear as possible as to what's happening, if you need more info, just let me know and I'll get what I can.

My girlfriend just purchased an Inspiron 1521 from Dell. (TK-55, AMD 690 chipset, Ati X1270) All was fine until a few days ago I noticed her widescreen 15.4" display was stuck in 1024x768. I tried to change the resolution only to find that it was only capable of 1024x768 or 800x600. I then tried to load CCC only to get an error stating that the driver was not installed or not functioning. Sure enough in device manager the x1270 is listed as having an installed driver, but Windows couldn't initialize it (Code 37). This is on Vista Home Premium 32-bit by the way. I just assumed somehow the driver was borked and needed a reinstall. This is where the headache began.

I have installed probably 20 different drivers on this laptop and none of them will work. I have used older catalysts all the way back to 7.2. I have tried the driver package on Dell's site as well as the ones on her resource CD. I even tried nabbing the drivers from other laptop models with the same graphics chipset. Most of those packages appear to be the same as the ones on Dell's site though. Every single driver I have installed has come up with the same error. Driver installs fine, but Vista won't initialize it. The only other oddities that happened at the same time as this were that Dell's Quickset somehow kept erroring out on boot. Just said it had stopped running. I reinstalled Quickset, it works fine. And one other thing went wrong in Device Manager. It was some Windows component listed in the misc system devices that had a driver error. I MS updated it though and it shows no errors now. (I can get the exact component later, GF has her laptop at school now.)

I'm at my wits end with this. This is my first real experience with Vista so I'm unfamiliar with it for the most part. The only thing I can think of is that something in Vista is actually blocking the driver from loading. It doesn't appear to be a wrong driver issue since every driver I've used has the same exact error including the ones that came with the laptop CD. I'm down to a last resort of trying system restore to bring the system back to fully functional, but outside of that I'm just lost.

Anybody have any ideas or suggestions?

And almost forgot, I did try the mobility modded version of the desk drivers. Same error there too.

Thanks!

hi. i had the same problem on my 1521 laptop but, i downgraded it to xp. the thing is that the graphic card is on your motherboard so i'd say to go Drivers & Tools | GAME.AMD.COM if no go to Drivers & Software . here chose your os, chose INTEGRATED/MOTHERBOARD and chose your graphic series.if THIS is not working, google omegadrivers there should be a page where to take your driver. and if u downgrade to xp, you should take your driver from omega driver. they are a bit more stable
