ATI Radeon X1200 and CAD softwares (56K Warning!)

Hello everybody,

I really need some help concerning my Radeon X1200. I have this card integrated in my Toshiba Satellite A215 and I've installed the last drivers fo it . I'm trying to work with my CAD software which it's said it requires OpenGL graphic cards and I observe that it's not running as smooth as it used to. There are some zoom-in and zoom-out functions in my software and when I'm using them - the image is vibrating first 1-2 seconds and than it zooms. There is also a rotation function which is activated using two mouse buttons pushed in the same time - when I'm using it, again, the image will start to rotate after a delay of 1-2 seconds. But the most disturbing problem is with a so-called "pre-selection" function: if I bring the mouse cursor over a group of parts (items) the software will pre-select everything in that group: the problem is that this pre-selection process will take a very long time, the program is freezing until all items (lines, surfaces) are highlighted and selected - it can take a few minutes. With my "old" Radeon Mobility 9700 card the same software works very quickly and smooth, without those delays.
Is the X1200 card "weak" compared to the 9700 one or is the 9700 card "closer" to the requirements of the OpenGL cards?
Can I do something about this, in order to have the same functionality with my x1200 card as with the 9700? (installing other compatible drivers - which ones?). For example, one of the certified cards for my software is the ATI FireGL 8800 - could I install those drivers in order to avoid the problems?

I will require more technical information about your laptop to provide better assistance. Such as the exact Model / Part number of your toshiba laptop. BIOS Version, memory, operating system....etc.

It sounds like your trouble is related to outdated OpenGL driver modules, or your BIOS needs updating. The Radeon X1200 is of the Radeon X1000 series GPUs, and technically, is suppose to run slightly faster / better then 9700. Both the X1000 series GPUs, and the 9700 GPU support OpenGL up to version 2.0

Have you attempted to update your drivers with the ATi Catalyst Mobility driver set? You can try to install it by downloading it from here:

These drivers are for XP. Please let me know if you are using a different operating system.

Could you also provide the Device ID for your Radeon X1200. You can find this by going into device manager, opening up the properties window to your Display adapter, clicking on the "Deails" tab, and set the drop down menu under "Property" to "Hardware IDs"

The string should look something like this (where the xxxx will specific to your model)
VEN_1002&DEV_XXXX&SUBSYS_XXXXXXXX.

I installed 7.4, 7.6, 7.8 and 7.10 and inistalled this (today) : Mobile Catalyst Download

Hello:

According to your diagnostic log, your video graphics driver isn't using any ATi driver, and instead using the default VGA windows XP driver. This driver cannot activate the X1200 GPU.

I assume your attempts to install the Catalyst mobility were unsucessful. If this is the case, then i need the exact device code of your GPU to further assist you. You can find this device code by doing the following:

Right click on "My Computer" and select "Manage"
When the Computer Management window appears, select Device Manager in the left window, and then expand "Display Adapters" in the right window. Select your X1200 GPU device. It may be listed as a "VGA Compatible display adapter" or something similar. Right click the device, select properties. Click on the "Details" tab.

There well be a drop down menu under "Property" under the "Details" Tab. Make sure it is selected to "Hardware IDs" or "Compatable hardware IDs".
Again, your device code should be listed as VEN_1002&DEV_xxxx&SUBSYS_xxxxxxxxx where the x's are variable specific to your model.

You could also provide your notebook's model number which should be located at the bottom of your notebook.

Hello:

Your information as allowed me to established tha your laptop is using an X1200/X1250 series GPU. Your computer is using the default vga display driver which disables the 3D core of the Radeon GPU. You will need to modify the Catalyst Driver's INF code for proper driver installation.

Download and run the Catalyst mobility Version 7.10 from the link i gave you. When it trys to install, it will fail. Don't worry about this.

The driver has now unpacked into c:\ati\support\7-10-mobile_xp32_dd_ccc_enu_53252

Using notepad, open the following file:

c:\ati\support\7-10-mobile_xp32_dd_ccc_enu_53252\driver\xp_inf\CX_5325 2.inf

Goto device manager, right click on your Video Controller (VGA Compatible), click update driver, Choose the second "Advanced option", on the next screen, select "Don't Search, i'll choose the driver to install" (or something similar). Click "have disk", click "browse", enter:
c:\ati\support\7-10-mobile_xp32_dd_ccc_enu_53252\driver\xp_inf\CX_5325 2.inf

Click OKAY, then Next. You will get a "driver signing" wanring. Click "Continue Anyway". Let the driver install, and restart your system when prompted.

Upon restart, you may also want to install Catalyst control center, click start ---> run.

Enter the following:

C:\ATI\SUPPORT\7-10-mobile_xp32_dd_ccc_enu_53252\CCC\setup.exe

Acording to your help, bellow the entry [ATI.Mfg.NTx86] , I inserted this:

(NOTE: the string "ATI Radeon X1200/X1250 Series" is not important,
we can write whatever we want "ATI MOBILITY x1200" or "X1200")

Then, i made this sequence of actions :
Painel control-->SYSTEM-->device manager-->On Vga Display , right-clicked
"update driver" and browse d for the INF file I edited before :
"c:\ati\support\7-10-mobile_xp32_dd_ccc_enu_53252\driver\xp_inf\CX_5325 2.inf"
Well, after that I suppose i would get a "driver signing" warning.
But , i didnt receive that warning dialog !

I rebooted my laptop, and tryed to install

The same error appears :

Well, someone (here in this site) informed me to use MODTOOL so I tryed again
to run it.
Dont know what MODTOOL does. What I know , it uses MSXML "parser" to add some
lines to the INF file I talked before . It adds entrys bellow the entry [ATI.Mfg.NTx86] .
That was the Phase 2 - "Indiana Jones and the crystal.. modtools "

I ran the modtool and browse for the same INF again:
"c:\ati\support\7-10-mobile_xp32_dd_ccc_enu_53252\driver\xp_inf\CX_5325 2.inf"
..And clicked "modify"

After that , I tryed to reinstall the "display adapter" and finally, the ATI driver was installed

The problem was really on the INF file , witch didn't have the "Device instance"
of my VGA DISPLAY.The Guilt ? I think of TOSHIBA and ATI.
The fact , this problem show us that, those entreprises dont have a good inter-comunication and the consummer is prejudicate

Sorry, things have been very busy, and my last post had several errors in the instructions.

I finally had time to review what i instructed you to do, and realized i made a mistake in suggesting the use of the Catalyst Mobility driver.

The device instance string i suggested (Using the ati2mtag_RS690 string) was based on using the Catalyst 7.10 desktop drivers instead, which i would personally recommend using instead of the mobility drivers for modding purposes, because the code is slightly different.

To use the mobility Catalyst drivers the device instance string would have used ati2mtag_M52 or atimtag_M54 instead of the suggested ati2mtag_RS690 in the string.

The modtool basically adds all the common Mobility chipset device instances to the INF file so the Catalyst drivers will install without rejected the "unsupported hardware".

The RS690 apparently is the code name to the X1200/X1250 GPU in the Catalyst INF code.
and calling the atimtag_RS690 in the device instance allows for proper configuration of the X1200 GPU when using the original desktop drivers.

Please note:
Fundamentally, the Catalyst driver set is universal to all X1000 series GPUs for either Desktop or mobile platforms.

Plz help me! Ive got a HP-Compaq 6715s Notebook! I cant get my ATI Mobility Radeon Xpress 1250 to work proper! Under Windows Vista (OEM-Version) i had even a Ati Radeon Xpress 1270 (when i bought it there was a ati radeon xpress 1250 in the description of the online-shop!). Now under Windows Xp home edition i could only download an ati radeon xpress 1250 driver from the hp homepage for xp professional (is there a difference in that case between home and professional?) My grahipque chipset is a ATI RS690 Chipset. I tried everything but under Vista the Video-Driver ran more stable than on Xp! On XP i tried to play steam games like the new Team Fortress 2 or Half-Life 2 and so on but now i get blue screens when a level is loaded or when im ingame a while (cant read those blue-screens because the system is rebooting 1 second after it appears!)! I also tried the tips from Randomness but its getting more bad then before! Even the Modtool doesnt help because after modding the files it wants to install the driver for the x1200 series-driver but ive got a x1250 or xpress 1250!Plz help me!

Ps.: Is there a difference between x and xpress? Which catalyst-pack should is use? Im so desperate!

the dialog only identifies thwo entries with "ati2mtag_RS690" (its why it identifies two drivers ) and not "ati2mtag_M52 "/ "atimtag_M54"


Second question; does modtool only edit the INF file ? Or it does more than that????

There are no significant differences between driver for Home and Professional XP editions. In terms of ATi, the drivers are exactly the same.

Xpress chipsets generally referr to onboard integrated graphics solutions. Such chips are a physical part of the system motherboard, and most commonly used for notebook computers.

There is no significant change in driver configuration between the X1200 and the X1250, so using the X1200 driver won't be a problem. In fact, it makes driver modding much easier. Fundamenetally, the same Catalyst driver used for all X1000 series GPUs, with only very minor changes in default configuration. Mobility Catalyst drivers only add the PowerPlay feature for power management.

Basically, the Catalyst 7.10 driver can be modded to work with Radeon 9550 and above GPUs, desktop, or mobile, as long as the INF file is modded to contain the appropriate device code and install string.

nelsoncsb:

i noted that i should have used atimatg_M52 or atimtag_m54 when i was specifing the correct device string to manually add to the INF file of the original version of the Catalyst Mobility driver because atimtage_RS690M configuration isn't present in the INF originally, so invokeing the M52 or M54 would provide the closest configuration for the X1200/X1250.

The modtool adds the RS690M configuration, and hence you don't need to worry about these device strings anymore if your driver installed successfully. They are only posted as reference in case someone else wants to manually mod their INF file.

The Modtool only changes the INF and INI configuration files. The Catalyst driver files remain unchanged.

Hi ! I think you should find if HP-Compaq s in the list of notebooks supported. TOSHIBA isn't and don't know why ...

First try to remove ALL ATI installers on "Add/remove programs" , Probably you will find that is not so easy to do, but try to remove ATI directory and all registry entries for "ATI" with regedit.exe by searching those strings-

Then U have to reinstall the driver "by-finger" , Look for the "Vendor string" on VGA properties (see the screenshots how to find it) and see all the steps in this post . (and all the screenshots )

Modtool , doesnt remove nothing ( i think ) ,It adds strings to a INF file witch is located in a directory inside ATI directory-


I think i cannit help more than this ,The ATI Driver instalation still remains me a mistery ...I did it, but dont still know why..
Randomness can help you. Try to talk with him . He is cool guy and he know something about ATI drivers instalation.

Great! Does that mean every effort was just a waste of time? Ok at the moment they dont have drivers for Toshiba and HP but i really hope they will change this! I mean why do a manufacturer like hp or toshiba insert ati chipsets into a notebook and then the customer isnt able to update his drivers? WTH? I mean this is just a catastrophe!

Someone gotta write a letter and send it to AMD or sth like that... or lets start a boycott!

Apologies for the miscommunication. I meant to address both issues in this thread simultaneously with my original post in this thread.

Fundementally, as i posted originally, the X1200 is better than the Radeon 9700 GPU. It sounds like the drivers you have installed are have corrupted or missing OpenGL driver libraries.

You mentioned using a Radeon 9700. Was it in a notebook computer or on a desktop?
Are you using Windows XP or Windows Vista with your X1200?
Are you using a Java based CAD program such as CATIA or Solid Works?

Could you check the acceleration status of your hardware, and the driver version being used for it. See instructions at the end of this post.

I will need this information before i can start to isolate the cause of your OpenGL acceleration problem.

***Checking Windows Graphics Acceleration:
For XP:
Open the "Display" applet from control panel, goto the "Settings" tab, click on the "Advanced" button. In the new window, goto "Troubleshoot" and verify that the slider is set to "Full Acceleration" and "Writing Combing" is checked. If Write combining is greyed out as an unavailable option, don't worry about this.

***Check DirectX hardware acceleration status, and graphiocs driver version:
In XP and Vista:

run the command "dxdiag"
When the DirectX Diagnostic window appears, goto the "Display" Tab and verify that DirectDraw, Direct3D and Texture Acceleration are enabled.

Here you can also report your graphics driver version. Please provide the "main driver" file name(s), and verison, and whether the driver is "WQHL Logo'd".

OEM's use RADEON chips from ATI, but those OEM's customize the LCD, MAINBOARD, and BIOS configurations. Fundamentally, ATI is not responsible for driver support for OEM products directly, unless said OEM participates with ATI in the appropriate support programs.

That said,

A Radeon GPU is still a Radeon GPU, and ATi's Catalyst Desktop driver can be "modded" to work with notebook computers, or in some cases, the Catalyst Mobility driver can also be successfully modded as well.

Most OEM's don't make any significant changes to the GPU's hard-wired configuration, and hence, ATi's drivers will function with the Radeon GPU. Sometimes the GPU will function with the driver, but support for external monitors or custom display resolutions become unstable or unsupported.

In any case, using a modded Catalyst Driver cannot guarantee that your hardware will work 100%, but there is usually a high probability of success that it will.

Adding a notebook's graphics hardware ID string is the key to modding the Catalyst driver to allow it TO BE INSTALLED MANUALLY THROUGH DEVICE MANAGER. The setup program will not function for you even if you modify the INF for the driver.

The modtool available from DriverHeaven is available to modify the necessary INF files to allow for installation with out the need to edit any INF file yourself. But those modified drivers still need to be installed manually.

If you are still having difficulty modifying your drivers yourself, or with the modtool, please post the specifics of your problem, and steps you have taken.

- the Radeon 9700 was also on a notebook, on my "old" ACER Travelmate 291LCi (the exact description is: ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, 3D Graphic / 64MB VRAM);
- I am using Windows XP Professional x64 Edition;
- yes, I'm trying to use Catia; it also has to be able to work in Solid Works or UG;

Note: Every time I try to install or update the display driver, if i choose "Install the software automatically" - or even "Install from a list of specific location" / "Include this location in the search" and I give the path of ATI X1200 driver (C:\ATI\Support...) - Windows will install allways "Standard VGA Graphics Adapter"! I have to select the option "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install" to be able to install the X1200 driver.

Now the settings:
- Windows Graphics Acceleration: "Hardware acceleration" is set on "Full" and "Enable write combining" is available and checked;
- DirectX Diagnostic: DirectDraw Acceleration, Direct3D Acceleration and AGP Texture Acceleration are enabled;

Your problems may lie in the fact that you are trying to install a modded 32-bit driver on a 64 bit system.

I have modded a Catalyst 7.10 64-bit driver to accept your notebook's X1200 series GPU. I checked its structure, and it includes the necessary OpenGL libraries to support your applications.

PLEASE NOTE: Make sure that you also have .NET 1.1 and .NET 2.0 installed. Goto Microsoft Download Center and download and install the .NET Framworks (version 1.1 and 2.0) BEFORE installing the driver and ATi CCC.

You will need to manually install the driver through Device manager using the "Don't Search, i will choose driver to install" option, click "Have disk" and browse to the "CA_53250.inf" file in the Custom 64 directory unziped from the "X1200_x86_64.zip" file.

Click "Continue Anyway" when you are prompted about driver signing wanring. and restart your computer when prompted.

To install Catalyst Control Center, unpack the "CCC_x86_64.zip" file, and run setup.exe

I am unable to test these drivers, and as always, you use them at your own risk.

If you run into problems, let me know. If the drivers install fine, and accelerations are enabled, in DirectX you should see under the Display tab on the right side with the Driver name as ati2dmvag.dll version 6.14.10.6727

If you still encounter preformance issues, the cause may be linked outside of the driver genre. I would then suggest updating Windows, and your CAD programs, and your notebook's BIOS.

Ok I am having the same problem with the ati drivers I have a Toshiba A215-S4697 took windows Vista off and Installed Windows XP Pro Sp2. I can not get it to take any driver. Tried everything. The Device Driver details are as follows:

PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_791F&SUBSYS_FF001179&REV_00\4&14A FA61C&0&2808

The computer processor is an AMD Turion 64 X2 MobileTechnology and TL-52 1.6ghz.

Any Suggestions?

Hi Eric try to do all the steps i have made . But put in your mind , this is a hack not a definitive solution :S BTW my XP crashed today , and i think its because this AMD/ATI
driver is instable. Our toshiba's were make only for working in Vista..."This is sad ...but true"


This is insane , i im thinking to develop a website to all AMD/ATI customers to collect complaints´..do u agree with this idea?

Hi randomness , I have really bad news .. my XP crashed and its quite known the Blue screen of death i receive:

"A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this Stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Disable or uninstall any anti-virus, disk defragmentation or backup utilities. Check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drives. run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption and then restart your computer."



XP Repair didnt work...have school and i am desesperate with this. The worst was that I had downloaded the Windows Vista but , but in my XP instalation could not burn CD , and think because I coudnt install SM Bus controller.

Well Randomness, when i installed Catalyst , i swerd didnt hope about it. It was a good trick but like yoiu can see in my "AIDA reports" , the AMD chipset included in this Toshiba IALAA wasnt identified by AIDA32 !!

All the guys who are trying to install ATI X1200 will have this problem, too!!
Because of this issues, then I tried to install another AMD chipset - Athlon 64:
AMD Athlon™ 64/FX Processor Utilities & Updates
AMD Athlon™ 64/FX Processor Driver Version 1.3.2.0053 for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003 (x86 and x64)

XP was constantly asking for AMD k8 processor driver !!
And , this is the final history...tryed to unistall one , two times, and now cannot boot XP!!

This is not a ATI problem , is more than that. IT is a AMD problem, i think!?!
What you think about this Randomness? Why AIDA32 coulndt not find for the AMD chipset included in the motherboard TOSHIBA IALAA ?
