Hello nelsoncsb:
Things have been busy, and i won't be able to completely tackl your problem until the weekend. I would suggest you obtain a copy of PCLinuxOS Live CD/DVD or Knoppix Linux CD/DVD. That should be able to boot your system, allow access to your windows partition, and let you burn files off of your harddrive. For now, i am listing your system specifications and personal notes regarding your notebook's hardware based on your posted diagnostics report. Please correct any specifications you feel are incorrect about your system. good luck, take care - Randomness ***Specs*** 100 GB Harddrive Toshiba BIOS dated for 07/02/07, listed version as V1.40 Realteck RTL8139/810x Ethernet Toshiba Satellite A210, Version PSAEGE-004003PT AMD Turion 64 X2 TL-52 1600MHz, 2x1024 @ 128-bit PCMCIA using TI PCI84x2 or PCIxx12 Cardus Controller Realtek HDA 1024x768 raster display FUJITSU MHW2120BH HArddrive MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S Optical Driver 111.8GB harddrive, 3 partitions, C: ("Vista") and D: (Data) Unknown partition (Code $27) 1500 MB Atheros AR5007EG Wireless network adapter TI PCIxxx12 Integrated FlashMedia Controller SDA Standard Compliant SD Host Controller TI OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 controller no southbridge information available from diagnostics. |

Hi friend.
Yes all information is correct. About southbridge ; What's this component ? Is it important ? BTW i reported this to AMD support , and their answer is :" contact the Toshiba support" "....The answers for your questions: 1.the latest notebooks are developed for Windows Vista, so the manufacturers provide basically drivers for win Vista. Later they release drivers for WinXP but most of them are beta drivers with no 100% compatibility with the hardware. But this is a problem of the manufacturer. 2.When the driver is not installed correctly, the uninstaller can not remove this driver exactly. In this case you can use an driver removal tool like: driver cleaner: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=745 3.This problem occurs because you installed ATI driver is not compatible with you hardware, means you should use the drivers from the Toshiba website. 4.This is also an problem of the false driver, please contact Toshiba to get the right driver for your system. 5.Drivers for the turion 64 mobile are here available: http://www.amd.com/us-en/Processors/TechnicalResources/0,,30_182_871_13349,00.html But we are recommend to install the original drivers from Toshiba. The drivers from our website are only for activating cool and quiet." This last phrase explains everything about this : No cooperation between manufacturers. Certainly I have tried their suggestions and use the "hacking software". I will report this to Toshiba . IF I don«t receive a good response, I'll report this to European Commission for Consumer Affairs. (URL: http://ec.europa.eu/consumers/redress/ecc_network/index_en.htm ) This organization acts seriously in Europe, and will resolve this situation. Thanks. |

nelsoncsb and Eric1134:
May i ask why you've both removed Vista in favour of XP Pro? Some computer hardware functions better with Vista, and in some cases, was exclusively designed to run in vista. The Southbrdige is very important. It compliments the northbridge, and serves as the hub for most of your system peripherals. They are especially important in notebooks because they control a LARGE number of devices, such as the CD/DVD ROM, harddrive controller, USB, IEEE 1394, serial and parallel ports, audio subsystems, PCMCIA cards, PCI Bus, PCI-E Bus, etc and so forth. Your diagnostics records indicate you did not have any southbridge drivers installed. They may be the cause of your problem. I will try to figure out a way to discover your southbridge soon. I must run to work. Good luck, Take care, Randomness |

You are completely right about southbridge drivers. There isn't a driver neither on AMD portal nor Toshiba . "AMD is not responsible for that" this is the conclusion I get from them. Friend this is the worst support I ever get. The reason of changing Vista to XP is only one: performance. And believe me : On vista I could see the redesign of desktops icons..the speed of processor was a "shame". When I made the downgrade to XP, the performance was 3 or 4 times faster! That's the reason..But I could only feel the XP velocity during 2 days. Now, I have to try again Vista...for my unhappiness. The truth is that , 1.6GH is not enough to Vista with a weak ATI card. In minimum 1.9GHZ~2GHZ . And in my point of view, all the manufacturers should obligatory give support to XP/2000 for this type of notebooks. Windows Vista have protocols with some manufacturers to install this Operating System , but I have no doubts that is not fair for this type of machines! Cheers to you, my friend, Hope to have your reply soon. Nelson Brito Last edited by nelsoncsb; Oct 24, 2007 at 08:57 PM. |

Hello again,
Conrad: How is your graphics issue progressing? Has it been resolved? nelsoncsb: After decoding the HEX offset data from your posted diagnostic reports, i have determined that your system is using X1200 / X1250 IGP northbridge with a SB600 southbridge. From what i have read, the X1200 and X1250 are nearly identical in respect to graphics core design, and hence, their drivers can be used interchangeably. The design of your system suggests it would function fast/best on Windows Vista, and i am uncertain what you mean in regards to preformance increases found in XP. Fundamentally 2GB of RAM and a 1.6 GHz dual core Turion CPU should provide sufficient power for Vista to operate smoothly. Moreover, the X1200 should provide sufficient GPU power for the Aero interface without burdening the CPU. In anycase, the southbridge is a standard ATi SB600. When i get more time i will post instructions on where to find XP drivers for this chipset. The general direction i can give for the moment would be to goto ati.amd.com, goto the drivers section, and look under Motherboard/IGP for the X1200 or X1250 (either one will do because the drivers are the same). HOWEVER, the X1200 Radeon driver still needs to be modded, and installed after the southbridge driver is. I will try to post better instructions when i get more time. Take care, good luck, - Randomness Last edited by Randomness; Oct 27, 2007 at 01:51 AM. Reason: Fixing some typos caused by my insomnia |

Well, I am certain 100% that, the XP performance after I installed ATI driver (and modded/hacked it) was really superior than in VISTA environment !! Like I said before, the desktop's icons were always redesign every time I dropped a window. This behavior was the same since I enter for the first time in Vista OS which was obligatory imposed in this laptop. This type of obligation is not logical and I believe you know I'm right about this issue , If I live near you I would show you the real performance of XP and 2000!! Other issue is about Vista and compatible various types of software . Like you know there is more support with XPP. I will wait for those Southbridge drivers for XP , if u could find them, i would thank you very much ! Hope to have more news . PS- you suggest me to try the string "mtag_52" or "mtag_54" , but a friend of mine who have the same TOSHIBA put that string WITHOUT SUCESS. |

Hello again:
You can get the southbridge directly from ATi/AMD by going here: AMD GAME! Drivers and Utilities You want to download the "South Bridge Driver" (3.2MB, version 7.10) It should install without any trouble, your device codes are in the package's INF files. Your diagnostic logs also suggest you may also want to install the "GART Driver". But i am uncertain if it is necessary. I will be quite busy next week. I may not be able to respond until next weekend. Best of luck, take care. - Randomness P.S. Don't bother with the mtag_52/mtag_54 strings. They are specific to the Catalyst Mobility drivers only. Use the original string i posted earlier when modding Catalyst Desktop Drivers. |

Feedback for Randomness
Hello Randomness,
sorry for the late answer... was in business trip last 2 weeks. I've followed your advice, I made everything like you said (I think), but unfortunately there is no improvement at all... So i'm extremelly confused, coz i i'm quite newb on modding sth, i think i will be very newb if i keep my pc on vista OS. But i have downloaded the modding tool and trying to understand how to install it ![]() I've read all messages, but i can't understand everything( i'm newb :/ ), maybe i missed some usefull info in this forum, maybe i can resolve this problem myself? Hello again,
Conrad: Your DirectX diagnostic log suggests the driver and display system is working fine. All i can suggest is there may be a non-display driver related issue at work. As i said, in theory the X1200 should have more GPU power then the 9700. I will try to look into OpenGL diagnostic mechanisms, when i last used CATIA, i remeber it using OpenGL instead of DirectX. UFasas: I will need to get back to you on instruction on how to modd and install modded drivers at another time. At the moment, i am presed for time. Gotta run, Good luck, and take care. - Randomness |

Hey Conrad,
Just noticed that you've near enough the same spec machine as mine regarding internals (mine's a HP 6715B). I noticed in your log that you've got a healthy 700meg display memory whereas mine's a measly 128meg even though we're both running the same h/ware & s/ware. I'm bit of a newb here, but I've put HL2 on my lappie and it struggles a bit. Can someone help me to allocate some more memory to the display. Regards Paul. |

Hello Ufasa:
Please understand that the Windows Vista HAL, and DirectX 10 Virtual memory management allow the total "graphics memory" to appear to be 830. depending on how much RAM is installed. For Instance, my X1950 Pro has 256MB of onboard (dedicated) memory, however the same Vista dialog as shown in your last post reveils i have 1022MB of "total graphics memory". This is not a Hardware extension, such as the shared video memory option found in your BIOS. This is a software extension that is specific only to the Windows Vista Graphics sub-system. Take care, have fun, good luck. - Randomness |

Hello Randomness,
I have some news, I don't know if good or bad: I've tested Solidworks 2007 on my Toshiba to see if I have the same graphical problems and... it's functioning PERFECT!!! I have no problem at all with my ATI card, it's reacting very good to all commands (zoom, rotate, etc.). Would this mean now that there is no problem at all with the drivers, but only with some Catia settings? Please help me again with an advice. Thank you in advance! Conrad |

Hello! I've also bought a Toshiba (A215-S7422) and have since downgraded it from Vista to XP Pro.
After a lot of digging I've been able to get all the drivers I need, so I belive. The last driver was for the Radeon Mobility X1200. I've followed the instructions here and have manually modified the INF file of the Catalys 7.11 by adding an entry for ati2mtag_RS690 w/ my video's ID. The driver was loaded successfuly and everything seemed to work fine. I then attemped to watch a DVD movie using Windows Media Player (WMP)11 . I got an error indicating that it could not play the DVD due to a problem w/ digital copy protection between the DVD drive, decoder and video card. It went on to suggest that I upgrade my video card driver. I then installed Nero Suite. I was able to "watch" the video, sort of. I didn't get the msg but the image was all chopped up. Next, I downloaded the Mobility Catalyst 7.11 and again manually modified the INF file and later loaded it. This time I made an entry for ati2mtag_M52 instead. I repeated the steps above to watch the same video and got the same results. Otherwise, my system seems to be working fine. What do you think the problem is? I'd appreciate any help! Thanks. |

Different X1200 issue
I've done a little more research and damage since my last post.
I've loaded a movie onto my hard drive and I was able to watch it just fine. That leads me to believe that the video card is fine. I've checked the IDE channel for the DVD RAM and it was set to Ultra DMA Mode 2. I'm thinking that it should be faster than that, say Mode 5. This may be the problem. In trying to fix this, I uninstalled the drivers for the DVD RAM (which seemed to have been a generic DVD/CD driver anyways) and the IDE (which used to say Primary IDE). I'm now stuck. Every time I launch XP Pro I get two messages for two newly found pieces of hardware, the MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S and the IDE Controller. I'm worse off now :-(( Any help would be greately appreciated. Thanks. |

Hello again! Things are looking much better now.
After a lot of trial & error and the re-install of XP Pro, everything seems to be working now. I'm now running WMP9, so I may have the security problem when I upgrade to WMP11. We'll see. Thanks. |

Hello again Randomness,
I have some other informations: as you know, I have installed the Catalyst package (driver + manager)... now, if I go in Device Manager - Display Adapters and I select "update driver", the system will find allways "standard vga adapter" as "best driver" for my video card and will install it! Of course the image quality is not so good with this "standard vga adapter" but... all the graphics problems I have in Catia are GONE (ok, I have now bad resolution, so the icons are difficult to recognize)!!! So I don't have any problems with zoom and 3D rotation functions! Can we conclude now that the problem is not at the graphic card (as hardware) but only at the driver (software) which is not matching perfectly the card? Why doesn't identify Windows correctly my graphic card? Is there any software whic would detect more accurate my hardware devices? Thank you in advance for your help. Conrad |

Same Problem, Different Machine using X1400
Can someone help me perform a similar task on my Lenovo T60 with an ATI Mobility x1400 instead? I've dowlnloaded the exe from the link provided but haven't modified the .inf file yet as I'm using a different chip. Ideas?
Thanks in advance! Doug |

I assume that you downloaded the .exe from site sesa linked? I've looked the files in there and it looks to me that it is already modded set of drivers. But I'm not 100% sure about it. So the safe bet would be to download the drivers from the AMD's download site and mod them.

Hello Randomness,
I didn't heard from you for a while... I think you have a lot of knowledge about problems with ati mobility, so please, if you can, help me further with an advice... (please see my last two posts in this thread). Thank you very much in advance. Conrad |

Hello Conrad:
According to your diagnostic report in Post 25 of this thread, you installed the modded drivers correctly. You mentioned that Everything was working "perfectly" in Post 47. Which driver was installed during that time. You also emntioned that you "updated" the driver in your following post. Why? Your system will not automatically select a modded driver when it searches for driver updates. Since your system doesn't have any "original" XP drivers, it will default to VGA driver, which does not provide any 3D Acceleration features available in the X1200 GPU core. CATIA uses OpenGL Graphics libraries, which are included with the modded drivers i had posted at one point, however, there are some situations where they are not configured properly. I suggest you do the following: 1) re-install the modded drivers, and Control Center. I am still assuming you are using XP 64-bit. 2) download and run the OpenGL Extensions Viewer available here: OpenGL Extensions Viewer Run the program, goto the "Extensions" Tab, and report what is being used as the Renderer. If something Generic is displayed relating to Windows XP GDI, and only Supporting Opgenl GL 1.1, then the libraries for the modded driver aren't being configured properly. If this is the cause, i will try figure out a registry tweak to correct this when time permits. Best wishes, happy holidays, take care. - Randomness |

glad to hear again from you!
Hello Randomness,
thank you for your reply. I'm trying to answer as short as possible to your questions: - in post 47 I was talking about testing Solid Works on my laptop; apparently I have those graphic problems only in Catia, because in Solid Works none of mentioned problems occurs! It's strange because I know that both Catia and Solid Works are using OpenGL, so I should have graphic problems also in SW, right? - I mentioned in a further post that I updated the driver, because I was still trying to find a solution to my Catia problems... But the point is: when I'm trying to update the driver of my graphic card and I let Windows to search for a better driver, it will allways choose "Standard VGA adapter"! I was just expected that Windows will propose an ATI driver... but anyway, if I accept and install that "Standard VGA adapter driver" as proposed, I will not have the graphic problems in Catia, but with the cost of a very bad resolution. Finally, here is the report from OpenGL Extensions Viewer (as you observed, I'm running Windows XP Pro x64): System Info Windows XP Professional, x64 Edition Vendor ATI Technologies Inc. 2.0.7058 WinXP Release Renderer ATI Radeon X1200 Series Generic Extensions GL_ARB_depth_texture GL_ARB_draw_buffers GL_ARB_fragment_program GL_ARB_fragment_program_shadow GL_ARB_fragment_shader GL_ARB_multisample GL_ARB_multitexture GL_ARB_occlusion_query GL_ARB_pixel_buffer_object GL_ARB_point_parameters GL_ARB_point_sprite GL_ARB_shader_objects GL_ARB_shading_language_100 GL_ARB_shadow GL_ARB_shadow_ambient GL_ARB_texture_border_clamp GL_ARB_texture_compression GL_ARB_texture_cube_map GL_ARB_texture_env_add GL_ARB_texture_env_combine GL_ARB_texture_env_crossbar GL_ARB_texture_env_dot3 GL_ARB_texture_float GL_ARB_texture_mirrored_repeat GL_ARB_texture_rectangle GL_ARB_transpose_matrix GL_ARB_vertex_blend GL_ARB_vertex_buffer_object GL_ARB_vertex_program GL_ARB_vertex_shader GL_ARB_window_pos GL_ATI_draw_buffers GL_ATI_envmap_bumpmap GL_ATI_fragment_shader GL_ATI_separate_stencil GL_ATI_shader_texture_lod GL_ATI_texture_env_combine3 GL_ATI_texture_float GL_ATI_texture_mirror_once GL_ATI_vertex_streams GL_ATIX_texture_env_combine3 GL_ATIX_texture_env_route GL_ATIX_vertex_shader_output_point_size GL_EXT_abgr GL_EXT_bgra GL_EXT_blend_color GL_EXT_blend_func_separate GL_EXT_blend_minmax GL_EXT_blend_subtract GL_EXT_clip_volume_hint GL_EXT_compiled_vertex_array GL_EXT_draw_range_elements GL_EXT_fog_coord GL_EXT_framebuffer_object GL_EXT_multi_draw_arrays GL_EXT_packed_pixels GL_EXT_point_parameters GL_EXT_rescale_normal GL_EXT_secondary_color GL_EXT_separate_specular_color GL_EXT_shadow_funcs GL_EXT_stencil_wrap GL_EXT_texgen_reflection GL_EXT_texture3D GL_EXT_texture_compression_s3tc GL_EXT_texture_cube_map GL_EXT_texture_edge_clamp GL_EXT_texture_env_add GL_EXT_texture_env_combine GL_EXT_texture_env_dot3 GL_EXT_texture_filter_anisotropic GL_EXT_texture_lod_bias GL_EXT_texture_mirror_clamp GL_EXT_texture_object GL_EXT_texture_rectangle GL_EXT_vertex_array GL_EXT_vertex_shader GL_HP_occlusion_test GL_NV_blend_square GL_NV_occlusion_query GL_NV_texgen_reflection GL_S3_s3tc GL_SGI_color_matrix GL_SGIS_generate_mipmap GL_SGIS_multitexture GL_SGIS_texture_border_clamp GL_SGIS_texture_edge_clamp GL_SGIS_texture_lod GL_SUN_multi_draw_arrays GL_WIN_swap_hint WGL_ARB_extensions_string WGL_ARB_make_current_read WGL_ARB_multisample WGL_ARB_pbuffer WGL_ARB_pixel_format WGL_ARB_render_texture WGL_ATI_pixel_format_float WGL_ATI_render_texture_rectangle WGL_EXT_extensions_string WGL_EXT_swap_control Core features v1.1 (100 % - 7/7) v1.2 (100 % - 8/8) v1.3 (100 % - 9/9) v1.4 (100 % - 15/15) v1.5 (100 % - 3/3) v2.0 (100 % - 10/10) v2.1 (33 % - 1/3) OpenGL driver version check (Current: 6.14.10.7058, Latest known: 6.14.10.7058): Latest version of display drivers found According the database, you are running the latest display drivers for your video card. Hello,
I just finished "upgrading" my laptop (Toshiba A215 S4807) from Vista to XP, and the information I received here was my saving grace in getting my ATI display driver installed ! (and Toshiba said it couldn't be done...lol) I joined DriverHeaven just to thank you. Thanks again, Nightster |

Hello Conrad,
Sorry for the late reply...been very busy. The OpenGL information and the information you provided from previous posts suggests that the modded driver is functioning correctly. Which probably means the slow down might be with an unrealted system component. If your GPU is sharing system memory, that might be causing a bottle neck, which would explain why the older 9x00 card you mentioned would preform better, as it has dedicated memory, and hence a dedicated memory bus to use for itself. Sorry i couldn't be of more help. Take care, - Randomness |
