ATI Mobility Radeon X300

I'm so not happy. I have a two year old Dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP Professional. I have downloaded the newest driver but it doesn't recognize my video card. DriverVersion recognizes it as does Dell's website. I was told by DriverVersion that I should download Catalyst 7.9 which I did but when I tried to install it I received the following error message "setup did not find a driver compatible with your current hardware or operating sustetm." DriverVersion said I should download nVidia Windows Display driver 163.71. Upon installation I receive an error message which says: "nVidia could not locate any drivers compatible with your current hardware" I also didn't realize that when I used DriverCleaner yesterday on the ATI files that this morning I would be running in 4 bit color with giant icons and have to reinstall the ATI driver from the original Dell CD. I came her for solutions after a game I had been playing for some time wouldn't start and now in addition to the above I need to rebuild my icons as they all have distorted lines through them and TweakUI's icon repair didn't work. Any ideas? Please.

First, the normal Catalyst drivers will not work with your card.

Second, the nVidia drivers will CERTAINLY not work with your card!!!!!!!

You'll need to download the ATi mobility drivers, or use the DH Mobility Modder tool:

Thank you I will try that. Is the purpose of DriveCleaner to delete the drivers currently on your system? Then you reinstall new. Just curious why Driver Version Check would tell me they were out of date and prompt me to download them from the website.

Yes, the purpose of DriverCleaner is to completely remove the existing drivers for your video card from the system. Then, once those are removed, you are to install the newer version of the drivers.

Now, the reason that DriverVersion told you that your drivers were out of date is because there is a newer version of drivers available. However, if I were you, I'd adhere to the motto: "If it ain't broke, don't try to fix it!"

That is, if you get your system running satisfactorily again, ignore any 'warnings', 'notices', and other prompts to update something just for the sake of updating.

And, as Grace said, you will never, ever, get any nVidia drivers working on an ATI video card. That's like trying to run your automobile -- if you have one -- on water instead of gasoline. The two video cards are not compatible.

As a side note, I'm moving this thread to the correct forum for help with the mobility drivers.

Good luck!

If I could only fix the vertical white line going through my icons and green line in Windows Media Player I would be so happy. I am reluctant to remove the drivers as every new driver I try to install either from Dell or ATI says they are incompatible with my system. There must be some way to fix this. Dell wanted me to restore my computer to it's original state when I bought it, and I don't want to reinstall everything. I tried a system restore but that did nothing to help the cause.
