Most up to date drivers for Mobility Radeon 7500
Hello.
I have a Dell Inspiron 5100 laptop with Mobility Radeon 7500c for it's video processing. It's currently installed with 6.14.10.6371 drivers, and a program I'm using is prompting me to upgrade to the 6575 drivers, or whatever is newest. In any case, the ATI website doesn't seem to have driver support for Mobility Radeon 7500. There's drivers for Radeon 7500 (not Mobility Radeon), but I've tried those just in case and they won't install on my system. Under Mobility Radeon, 7500 isn't supported at all. The Dell website isn't any help either. The drivers I have currently are the most up to date ones on the Dell website, and they haven't been updated since 2002, and are apparently nowhere close to being the most up to date drivers. Can anyone point me in the right direction as to where to update the drivers for my system? The ATI website did whatever checks for the Mobile Catalyst, and says that it won't run on my system. I would appreciate any help I can get on the subject. |

I'm afraid I can't provide many answers, but I can provide company in misery. I'm in pretty much exactly the same situation. Here's what I've tried:
Dell Drivers: The official Dell drivers are woefully out of date. I get all sorts of artifacts and stutters and many things don't work. Latest ATI Drivers: There's no official latest ATI driver for 'mobility' (ie. laptop shaped) Radeon display adapters. Quite why this is, I don't know. Apparently they have a policy of asking laptop manufacturers to modify non-mobility drivers for their own machines which seems a bit optimistic for old computers like ours. I've been told, though, that using the latest drivers from companies other than Dell will not work. Latest Drivers with DH Mod tool: Driver Heaven makes a tool, however, that modifies the latest ATI drivers so they'll work with mobility cards. This is called DH Mod Tool V4 (http://www.driverheaven.net/patje/). You download the ATI drivers, install them, wait for the installation to apparently fail, then run the DH Mod Tool. It works really well, and the driver installed fine. But after a while I started having a problem with a file called 'ati3d1ag.dll'. The computer would bluescreen when running a game called Battlefield 1942. I tired to run the game a few times to see if this was a random event, but it did it every time. More troublingly, the crashes seemed to destabilise the system. I got bluescreens all over the place. Eventually I reluctantly surrendered the official ATI drivers and looked for an alternative. Omega Drivers: The latest driver I've tried is the Omega Driver (http://www.omegadrivers.net/). Googling around, these stunning user-tweaked drivers seem to have a very good reputation. Unfortunately, they didn't work for me. I installed them, the installation went very well with a really friendly and usable interface, etc, but at the end of it I didn't have any 3D... ur... capability. Or whatever you call it. The testing tool 'dxdiag' informs me that Direct3D Acceleration is 'Not availible'. Unfortunately, this is all rather beyond my expertese with computers, so I can't provide much more in the way of advice. I hope that you've had more luck than I have. |

After much investigation, I've discovered that the driver Catalyst 6.2 seems to work well with this graphics card.
You can download it here: http://ati.amd.com/support/drivers/x...-cat62-xp.html You'll want the 'display driver' link. You need to use the DH Mod tool, as described above. You'll also need to look out for a file called ati3duag.dll. When you uninstall whatever driver you have installed at the moment, search for this file and delete it before you install the new driver. I found that the uninstall failed to clean it out properly and it caused problems for me. Installing the new driver put a properly working copy in place. |

I have to say this made all the difference on my Inspiron 5100 playing World of Warcraft. I used the 6.2 driver and the method described above to install it. I honestly experienced a 2x frame rate improvement and the graphics are now incredible! What a difference, I can put off buying a new laptop for a few more months.
Thanks, DR |

Hey Dreadnought1906
As I'm also in Deep S... I would like to ask you what prevented you from using Catalyst 6.5 - the Omega site claims that 6.5 is the latest Catalyst version supporting the Mobility 7500 - but I have not been able to get a verification from anyone on this .... Regards zEnterHacker |

So, anyone with DirectX 8 or earlier cards will need to use the older drivers from 6.5 or before.
