I would like to add both complete outputs, just in case you may see something:
The following (is there any way to send it attached?) xorg.0.log I got it after (partially) generating a new xorg.conf with fglrxconfig
and re-editing it to add key sections that were missing.

I just tried fglrxinfo from within the ssh session I have open (latop has still no window accessible) and I get something that might be a hint:
Quote:
fglrxinfo
fglrxinfo: error while loading shared libraries: libGL.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
|
Altough I have explicitly checked I do have these libraries both in 32 as well as in 64bits lib directories /lib, /lib64...
I'll leave the dmesg output for another posting if someone ask for it.
I'd appreciate any help as I do need 64bits (someone said installing suse32 makes everything working flawlessly), SUSE (I got used to it; not the time right now to change) and
3D.

I did this after su to root within the ssh session, I guess that was the problem. However,
once exiting root, fglrxinfo simply did not responded. A top showed that X was using 99.5%
cpu as if X was trying to "finish" something, which might explain why I could access to any window ...

Masanlop,
It is possible that the correct sync is not being set. Look for the following entries in /etc/X11/xorg.conf: These may already be set, but commented out - in which case try uncommenting them.
Next, you may want to find out the exact sync ranges for your laptop panel. I couldn't find them on Google (it seems others are looking too), but Compaq might be able to tell you. Anyway, the correct values should be entered in xorg.conf for HorizSync and VertRefresh
Hope it helps

Any suggestions? I tried doing something with xorg.conf for no avail. I really need that resolution, so any help appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

I have the exact same problem. I've been using 1280x960 on the previous ATI drivers, and was reluctant to upgrade to this version (didn't see the benefit). But then I decided to update all my Slackware packages with the release of 10.2, so it updated my X.org (though it's the same version...), and hence I had to reinstall the fglrx module. So, I thought, why not try 8.16.20?
And now, no matter what I do, 1280x960 is gone. I've set out my sync rates properly to suit my monitor, and even other flaming resolution works except the one I use! If I run xrandr, it gives this result:
Code:
SZ: Pixels Physical Refresh
0 1600 x 1200 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 60
*1 1152 x 864 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 85 *75 70 60 47 43
2 1024 x 768 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 85 75 72 70 60 43 100 90
3 800 x 600 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 85 75 72 70 60 56 120 100 90
4 640 x 480 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 85 75 72 60 120 100 90
5 1280 x 1024 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 75 70 60 47 43
6 640 x 400 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 75 60
7 512 x 384 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 75
8 400 x 600 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 75 60
9 320 x 480 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 75 60
10 320 x 400 ( 478mm x 359mm ) 75 60
1280x1024 is there aswell, even though I specifically selected every resolution EXCEPT that.
ATI are evil. They killed 1280x960. I'm going back to the previous version, if I can find the installer. I'll let you guys know if 1280x960 works when I switch back.
Edit: Just fired up 8.14.13... worked first time. Looks like I'll be sticking with this until ATI actually put the PROPER 1280 back in...

i realize this was a few months ago, but i've been having the same problem and finally got it working. so maybe someone else will come across this thread like i did... first, in the Device section, like it says to do here:
then ran gtf to get a modline for 1280x960 @ 85 hz, and added it to the Monitor section (here's mine even though i would guess it'll be different for different monitors):
Code:
# 1280x960 @ 85.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 85.68 kHz; pclk: 149.43 MHz
Modeline "1280x960_custom" 149.43 1280 1376 1512 1744 960 961 964 1008 -HSync +Vsync
then in the Display section, replaced Modes "1280x960" with:
Code:
Modes "1280x960_custom"
and that seems to have worked... guess it just needed a little more convincing =)

Code:

Wow... thanks heaps, that worked perfectly for me, and I didn't even uncomment the "NoDDC" line. I had specified a modeline previously, but I guess because I used "1280x960" it didn't accept it.
I did the same for all the lower resolutions, so now fullscreen apps that use 800x600/640x480 run at 120Hz rather than 85Hz. (The 120Hz option for these was always there in xrandr, but wasn't default and most games/etc don't allow you to choose.)
Happiness.
Now to try out X.org 6.9/7.0 and see if the new drivers work with that. (My reliance on the old 8.14.13 drivers was preventing me from upgrading X.org...)
Thanks again.
