Mobility Radeon x600 support

Hi,

I'm quite new to and thus confused about the ATI proprietary linux driver. So far I sticked with nvidia cards, but the laptop I fell in love with recently, has a Mobility Radeon x600 builtin.

After some research I figured that infomation about the chips the driver supports is not very easy to find. The two trustworthiest sources I found come to a different conclusion about wheather the chip is supported or not.

ATIs Release Notes say that only the MRx700 is, a post in this forum at Mobility on Linux? says x600 is supported as well.

Another option would be to buy the laptop with i915 chipset gfx and save some bucks if only 2d is working with X. Accelerated OpenGL would be nice though. Could anybody point me to some further info or confirm a working Mobility x600?
