With them dropping r200 support I wonder how long until they drop r300 support? Well, at least I get kinda working 3D with the open source r300 driver - they allow me to play my fav game Eternal Lands

They didn't drop r200 support (yet), as far as I can see. Where did you see they dropped it?

OK, dropped maybe too strong a word, but it sure doesn't appear to be supported in the last few releases either.

r300 opensource is good also! Well, good enough for the GL apps I use on my x600 in my laptop. Too slow for fps gaming though, but I'm sure they'll get there.

first off Thank You's to ATI for the new driver version (8.26.18).
im using SuSE 10.1 on a Asus A7N8X v2 board with an Ati 9800 Pro AIW.
im getting 12,290 fps avg on glxgears wich is way more than the previous driver for me.
I had a bit of trouble doing manual install instructions i had googled before
but was saved by the ati installer. The problem i had is the install of the rpm
said that files from the previous driver version conflicted so i tried running
the uninstall commands listed in the driver notes and that didnt work too good for me
even after putting a space between the "SH" and "the command"
But the driver installer was able to install it for me
Anyways im kinda suprised to see how little people comment on the Linux ati drivers
come on people if ya use them give some feedback and a thank you to Ati !
Let them know you care and appreciate their efforts !
My only wish would be for support for my TV out capability..
as in it would be great if i could use KdeTV with my 9800 AIW for example
and not have to resort to using my crappy 9$ stand alone pci tv card i have instead (which works fine)
and yeah i know its an old card but i just spent almost 200$ on one and so did a friend of mine.
Please dont forget how many people have these cards out around the world Ati

Before you do, you'll need a cvs mesa snapshot to get it working on x600 based cards - ie those in laptops.

Nope, mobility 9700 here. But still can't run Q3A without r_allowSoftwareGL "1". This is (of course) Fedora 5 / Xorg 7.0 / Mesa 6.4.2. Any ideas?

Sure, you need at least xorg-7.1 and mesa-6.5 for working (ish) r300 support.
Of course you won't see much distro support for that as ATI and nVidia don't support xorg 7.1 - and haven't for a few months now.
Luckily, xorg-7.1 is available for Gentoo users

X.org 7.1 and Mesa 6.5 are in FC6test1, so I see a lot of support in distro I care about... I will give it a shot on my desktop r300 (ATI 9600 non-XT), as soon as I get time. I don't want to install test version on this laptop, as it works just perfectly.

To make long story short, curiosity won. I installed SUSE 10.1 and I got Mesa 6.5 and X.org 7.1 from backports working. How can I verify that r300 is loading properly and that I have DRI and OpenGL working? Other than installing Quake 3 and playing a bit, I will do that when I get home

Nope, not working.
Code:
----- R_Init -----
...loading libGL.so.1: Initializing OpenGL display
...setting mode 3: 640 480
Using XFree86-VidModeExtension Version 2.2
XF86DGA Mouse (Version 2.0) initialized
XFree86-VidModeExtension Activated at 1024x768
Using 8/8/8 Color bits, 16 depth, 0 stencil display.
GL_RENDERER: Mesa GLX Indirect
***********************************************************
You are using software Mesa (no hardware acceleration)!
Driver DLL used: libGL.so.1
If this is intentional, add
"+set r_allowSoftwareGL 1"
to the command line when starting the game.

Well, I got it working (needed to recompile my kernel to get new drm.ko and modify xorg.conf to fix enable acceleration), but Q3A (i.e. "the benchmark") doesn't work nicely with it. It crashes on switching resolutions, and picture is somehow garbled in fullscreen However, it actually ran, which is good and it looks like they are progressing quite nicely, and with some more bugfixes done it will be able to completely replace fglrx for me.
I will watch out for X.org 7.2.

Yes, progress is slow, but at least people are trying.
And for me it's more stable than ATI driver to date which speaks volumes.

Absolutely. Suspend works on my laptop when opensource r300 is used, but not with ATI. Go figure. Actually, it's fascinating how much work have these people done with just reverse engineering.
