Ubuntu problems. has anyone got KDE working?

yeah im having serious probs with Ubuntu. Its based of Debian I believe. So at first it runs really fast, but then I Try to run things fullscreen and i get massive slowdown. I mean things like screen savers, games, and DVD\DivX. I had the same problem when I had win98 on this. When I put XP on my laptop everything was better...heres the real problem though: I need the newest drivers for my neomagic 256ZX and i cant find those for linux.

anyway back to the point. I get linux to load up KDE and it says it needs all these libary things that it says my distro SHOULD come with but doesnt(I think SuSE is one of the few that comes with KDE libraries pre-loaded) anyway I cant figure out how to make it download these! And I'm such a n00b that I cant figure out how to use the sourcecode at all. its driving me insane. if theres any linux guru out there that could help me, I would be really really happy. I thought it was kinda cool to have linux running but I'm only switching over if it does my basics. IMing, web browsing, Divx playback, and DVD playback. It does the first two, but DVD playback is sketchy right now and divx runs like molases in the winter when in full screen.

Sounds like you need to configure X for your graphics card as it may be running in VESA mode which although works, is very slow.

How you go about doing this? Try searching google for your graphics card/laptop model and XFree.

well that is an answer to the playback problem...but that still leaves me scratching my head as to how to get KDE and the CSS player going...
hmmm

I tried downloading the KDE libraries and KDE itself seperately and getting them all set up...I finally finished it and I needed to restart...so I did...and now the computer says that theres no OS. So I just re-installed XP to the laptop and I'm gunna wait a bit before I try installing linux again. Break is over and I have some tough classes this quarter, so I'm gunna hold off on messing with it anymore for a bit.

Geminiwave, dont give up on linux... Yeah it will give you some hard times, but when it works it is frickin awesome!! Try Gentoo, as it is also pretty fast and comes with some nifty tools, like emerge (which downloads, compiles and configures *sometimes* packages for your machine). But I recomend having some time on your hands, as it is sometimes difficlult. Good luck, and dont give up!

I understand man... I am freaking out here too, school takes up almost all of my time plus there is always work. That is why I did my install during the winter break, took me a frickin month to figure how to work everything on my laptop, and Im still trying to setup my wireless. Focus on school though, that is whats most important. Good luck man

You really might want to think about trying ProMEPIS as I have no issue /w my S3 TwisterK graphics and full screen on my laptop. It's still in beta, and not released to the public yet but I can manage to get you a copy.

http://www.mepis.org/book/view/1462 Gonna look would it be easy to install. I don't have cd burner here at work so I need to make webinstall with floppy boot :o Gentoo's/Ubuntu's install was too hard to start with floppies, I'd love try both with this work computer.

kde is available using apt-get in the universe repositories of ubuntu...
compiling it yourself can be a real pain. let apt-get do the work for you.

I did that at first and it said something about "Must download a bazillion other things first, is this okay?" and I said "yes" and then it grinds for a few minutes downloading shit and then it says "FAILURE!! WE ARE STUCK HERE SUCKING OURSELVES AND IGNORING YOUR REQUEST! HAHAHAHAHA" i swear to god I can hear it cackle!

no seirously though it just kept saying it couldnt do it. It was that way for a ton of stuff.

My friend finally told me how to fix it, but clearly too late because its off my laptop now(since it destroyed itself...and I need a working laptop for school. This summer I'll make the conversion over to linux 100%)

Laptops are a pain. You should have seen the number of loops I had to jump through to get FreeBSD to work on my Compaq R3000Z.

LMAO

Well good luck with whatever distro ya try...

I didn't like trying to use KDE with Ubuntu due to the difficulties with logging in as root.
I think gnome is a great desktop, but I prefer KDE, so I dropped Ubuntu and tried other distros as well.

If you want a KDE distro... ya can try one of the other Debian based distros such as Kanotix, Knoppix, or Mepis...
Or ya can try PCLinuxOS which is based off of mandrake but uses apt-get from debian and comes preinstalled with synaptic.

Anyways, let us know how it works out for ya....
