Linux Swap
I'm about to install slackware. I was just wondering.... is it necessary to have a swap partition if I have 512mb ram?

I think 200/250 megs would suffice.

yes, it will run without swap.
i digress though; Linux is far more agressive in the use of memory; it will consume all available untill there is no more, and then it will look for swap.
As with windows, try and have the swap on a different partition.
Listen, do what you do normally and run 'top' in a console window - have a look at your memory usage, and then decide if you need swap.
It will not use the swap unless it has to, unlike MS products.

Isn't the swap partition supposed to be created prior to installing anything linuxlike? ...it's been a while...

As far as I know, setting up swapspace is a mandatory stage when installing Slackware. Never tried to go around it mind you.

yes, creating a swap partition is a required step. Both Redhat and Slackware make you create one. Not sure about any other distros, never installed them.

Mandrake and Debian both require a swap as well.
