Try re-installing Mandrake from scratch, but get it to boot into a text console and not a GUI. After you've installed you can then tweak X to work with the 8500. This should solve your problem

I had mandrake 8.2 working fine with my 8500. No 3d of course, but everything else worked fine. Über's right: you should boot into the console and then configure X manually.

You could also try downloading and installing the mandrake 9 beta2. It is working great for me and my 8500. Wish someone would cough up some 3d drivers for it though.....

Default Post Summit...

For all you Linux, and BSD Users out here, here's my suggestion

Dishout 179$ for Xig's Summit 2.1 for the ATI Radeon 8500, DRI/DRM just utterly suck

http://www.xig.com/Pages/Atop/SummitPriceList.html

I know the idea may scare some of you, But i've been an AcceleratedX user for along time, and i will just say it's simply the best. You won't find any better support, or any better drivers.

You will get the 3D support as you desire, and proper 3D better then the DRI support.

It's currently on sale for 179$ take a look, it's worth it!
