Lately I've been messing with LFS(Linux From Scratch), but if I had to choose a distribution I'd go with Debian.. although I like anything other than Mandrake.

debian also has no dependancy problems like rpms and is supposed to be even more stable. but I think that's about it.

Gentoo goes one better with its PORTS system.

Downloads the source and custom compiles it for you

I loaded Mandrake 9.0 in this week and have it running fairly well, just got the Documentation today, I don't know enough to say I like one better as this is my first distibution. Getting used to new terms seems half the fun and half the battle.

Since my last post I have used Mandrake a little more and I still have a steep learning curve. I did download RedHat 8.0, Lycoris, and GenToo. I will look more seriously at the Linux learning in the coming weeks, but I can see that it is the future!

Mandrake 8.2, wont go near 9.0, its too 'new', an seems a bit of an issue pit. Maybe 9.2'll be better - 9.1 should be a nice halfway point.

Fact is I've got so used to 8.2 and invested a fair amount of time upgrading it and getting it really stable, so I'd be pretty loath to throw that effort away for no really massive gains.

my first real linux machine was mandrake 7.0, but they seem to get better and better in each distro. i'm currently running 9.0 with no problems on my server that i'm allowed to run at work. i've tried some of the others but keep going back to mandrake not necessarily because of ease of use, but because i've had great support from them. over the last couple years i prefer to do most things command line like most linux gurus, so usually i will do a simple install and install everything by hand. plus, the fact it is redhat compatible makes it a good alternative to redhat. the only bad thing right now is that they keep begging for money. other than that... i would like to give suse a try, but they don't seem to want to let you download a "download" version of their os to try. all they give you is a trial download which i do not like. anyone know where i could download the isos for the newest release of suse that isn't a trial? i think this is the only one i haven't tried of the linux distros because of the trial thing. thanks for any posts anyone may have!

Gentoo. Nothing compares. I hate redhat and madrake. Suse is all right. I've never installed debian although its all right to use. I give gentoo lots of credit. THey have the best OS in the world.

Hmmm, it's hard to pick a favorite. I'd say Red Hat is definitely my least favorite. I don't like how so much is meshed together. Mandrake 9 is cool. I'm in the process of testing out debian and gentoo. I'll see how they stack up.

I have to say, since my last post in July last year, I got my hands over a decently Linux supported video card (MSI GF4 Ti4200) and must say I've been very, very impressed at how easily everything got installed under Slackware 8.1.

The performance is excellent and it's good to be able to watch DVDs with Linux (you NEED to try Xine if you don't have it already).

I've been a tad dissapointed with Slackware 9.0 though. They still try to fit everything on a single CD and they're really to short on available space. You still get KDE 3.1 and Gnome, but some proggies like Evolution are gone from the distribution. Oh well.

RedHat 8 here. Hope to install RedHat 9.0 when I can get the time to do it.

I should add that I do like using Slackware for older computers.
If I want to install Linux on a 486 machine that is.

Gentoo, the best. Four very important things:

- Optimization for your system: edit one file, and your whole Linux will be optimized for your particular processor.
- Portage (aka emerge): one command, and your program is downloaded, compiled and installed.
- Superb community: the people are friendly and helpful at the Gentoo forums.
- Total control over your system: install what you want, with the options you want (that's why the USE flag was invented; for instance, if your USE variable has GTK2 set, Mozilla will compile with support for GTK2, otherwise, it will compile for GTK1).

Simple and effective. I have to agree with Goalie_Ca. They do have the best OS there is.

I like SUSE.

I like its european/germany developer basement.
It is LSB 1.3.
It has its fingers in united linux.
It is strong company, not one that will fade away.
It has yast.
It is getting better and better(not like RH and others).
It is quite an actuall distro when it goes out, rpm-finding-problem is getting better.
It isn't free...ehm =)

I like gentoo too, but gentoo, despite it is recent, wil never be the most stable/fixed distro, I wonder what QA is there....
Not to talk about server solutions(for me gentoo is allways just a good just for a desktop where you don't need such support like from SUSE)
