I'd also like to have some opinions on this OS.
But, for the moment, I think it's a rip to pay that sum, just to be a beta tester.

What about installing it ? Is it easy as Caldera Openlinux or complicated as slackware ?
I've managed to install and compile slackware successfully, so the the Lindows should be not a problem yes ?
Is Lindows freely downloadable ? or do i need to contact my local warez dealer ?
Thx for future info.
I'm in currenlty in period on testing different distros to find out the best for myself.

Lindows is not freely downloadable. It contains parts that are NOT covered by the GPL. These bits are mainly to do with emulating Windows and maybe installation as well.
Lindows will retail for (estimated) $99

I haven't tried Lindows yet but i will, thanks to the link provided here by Iceboy - ThanX dude!
I hope that the link still works...
I have to agree with Nikademus that they are asking for TOO MUCH just to be a beta tester.
I will let you all know what i think if i get it or else i will be watching this thread for more info...

It doesn't look like it works, so I probably saved $99. Anyway, I have even more doubts about it now.

Why bother. I went to their website and I don't think I like their attitude. Plus they have serious compatibility issues as of today, not quite up to the standards they're claming to achieve (even if in beta).
Just install a rock-solid, fully-GPL compliant, performant Linux distribution (like Slackware) and get WINE on top of that if you want to run Windows apps. Slackware is not THAT fearsome to setup (I was a beginner when I first tackled with 7.0).

Lindows will run, you just have to know how to install it, It will not run on a NTFS partition, because it does not create another partition it install besides windows, They had trouble with version 1.1.1 when it first came out they released a new one but did not change the version, Office 2000 will run with lindows as long as you do not install the office assistants....It will not install on ide 3 or 4, still no support for RAID or ATA 100, you are not paying 99.00 for testing, there is alot of software available thru a program they call click and run that you are paying for..If you read the disclaimer it states that even if you pay the 99.00 it does not guarentee a copy of any prerelease Lindows.....It will install you just have to know how....

from what I heard, Lindows is nothing but linux running a bad version of wine.
here is what a guy by the name of "Merlin262" wrote about it on another forum:
Big Note Before I'm Flamed, I am a (obviously) Linux fan....
Short Story:
Installation is easy, but after that, a lot is lacking.
Long Story:
With all the talk about Lindows being put onto Walmart PC's I decided to see if I couldn't give the OS a whirl. I'm not going to detail how I got to use it/the person who actually got it/etc... All that matters is I got to sit down at a machine with a Lindows CD.
Installation was straight forward enough. In fact, too straight forward. You have 2 choices: run it "under" Windows, or run it on its own hard drive. Nothing in between that I could tell in my brief period of time with it. No questions where asked at all regarding my hardware setup, everything was autodetected. This is about the level at which I expect all modern "user" linux distributions to act. Especially with Mandrake's hardware detection library, which is getting better all the time. I was pleased than on reboot, XFree86 came up at a decent resolution, refresh, and was nicely hardware accellerated.
The first thing I tested was Lindows claims on running Windows software(big note: this WAS the first release, it has hopefully improved).
Apps I tried:
Microsoft Office XP - didn't install, got a message "Must be using Windows blah blah blah"
Serious Sam - didn't install
Red Alert 2 - didn't install
(I was hoping to at LEAST see the installers work)
Tried a database ap that I have - installed, then told me I didn't have a CD-ROM drive.
(See a pattern.)
LindowsOS "Windows Compatibility" layer, is little more than a dressed up Wine. While Wine is getting to be *very* nice for running many Windows apps, I really wish Lindows would admit to this. After testing out it's Wine compatibility, and feeling very depressed, I decided to take a look at its merits as a Linux distribution in general.
For those curious, LindowsOS is really based off of Debian derivative(complete with apt-get, dselect, and dpkg). In reality, Lindows *is* pretty much Corel Linux with Wine. It uses the Xandros file manager and utilities, along with some renamed stuff.
I was very disturbed at how Lindows basically forces you to run as root, all the time. This type of thing invites exploits ala Microsoft Outlook and Windows. (I would much rather see a privledged 24/7 user account created with write access where needed, and a few managed set-user-id programs for OS updates and the like. No such luck.)
However, it is lacking several libraries to be used as a distribution. On installation of Heavy Gear 2, I discovered that libesd is missing, as well as SDL. Not good. With a bit of hacking Lindows would make a nice Linux distribution, much easier to use than Mandrake.
Another note is that Lindows did not play nice with another Linux setup, insisting that it get the MBR. So is the life of Window-like OS's though.
Had this been marketted as an "easy to use" linux, I might have gone for it.
