linux boot

hey this is a hypothetical problem.. if i have dual booted my system, a window and a linux os. when booting up it asks me which os to boot from by default it gives me 30 sec's..... so from the windows side i force (editing the boot.ini file) so that it boots directly form the linux OS with out waiting, but now how are you gonna change this setting back in case you want to use the windows system, from the linux OS ?

Re: linux boot

I think you would have to relocate the boot.ini file on the partition/drive Windows is installed on and edit it back.

Re: linux boot

In linux you have few different bootloaders, the most common now days is GRUB. In linux you need to edit it's boot parameters in order to change the default waiting times and boot orders.

Not within Linux

Exactly but if the boot.ini has already been edited and dedicated to Linux that can only be changed in the Windows boot.ini file.

I would suggest resetting what you have done and edit the Linux boot manager it is GRUB here on Ubuntu for me.

Er... You mean what the newest ubuntu does ?? Well that depends how you install the linux. The most common way is to burn the .iso image to DVD and then boot from there. That way it installs it self to separate partition. But when installed inside windows it creates "virtual partition" in a file in one of the windows hdd's...

Yes that's the way I have installed it. You can do it the other way around but I find the partitioning never works out properly ... perhaps just my experience with it.

Re: linux boot

well installed fedora, then tried to install vlc, using the code, had the following error
Quote:
Error: Missing Dependency: libpulse.so.0(PULSE_0) is needed by package vlc
Error: Missing Dependency: libopendaap.so.0 is needed by package vlc-core
Error: Missing Dependency: libdc1394.so.22 is needed by package ffmpeg-compat
Error: Missing Dependency: libdvdnav.so.4 is needed by package vlc-core
then tried to yum.. still had the same error, tried rpm, the codes of the libs it just doesn't help...

attempt1:burnt ubuntu 9 on a disk and installed it, on my 250Gb that was partitioned in 3. (20:20:200),, i installed it on my 2nd partition,...i could see the windows system file's on the other drive.... when i restarted it refused to boot.....

attempt2: i said forget it, installed xp, on the original partition, it installed fine, but when i went to compmgmt.msc it show'd me that there were 3 partitions; 1) 19.5 gb 2) 198 gb 3) 23* gb... {what the hell, i have a 250 gb HDD, how the hell did it become 500!, and what happened to my other 20 GB).....

atempt3: ok i said i tried to install ubuntu on the "disappear" partition,... it could no longer find any partition's on the drive,..... ok i partitioned it for the linux side 30 gb, and left the other untouched)..... it booted ok every thing was fine!!!!, i said cool, now let me install xp, put the disk in cut the untouched partition in half to install xp... installed xp,,, but now ubuntu does not boot ..

thanks man... I'm a novice at Linux, so it kind of depressing, when you have no clue as to what you are to do next ( also when you don't have net at home)

Re: linux boot

Well see I used a freshly formatted drive without existing partitions and let the Linux installer manage them. Linux when installed actually has 2 partitions itself and Windows one. So not really sure with existing partitions perhaps someone here has more experience with this than me.

Wish I could help out more mate.

Dude, if you're not installing of the web then basically you need to make sure you have those packages installed as the packages that you're trying to install require them to be there already in order for them to function, that's why they're called dependencies, I'd strongly suggest you get net to that rig man, without net it becomes a pain to install anything.

Re: linux boot

I'd recommend a distro like Ubuntu for starters, also Gnome I think is easier to use as a desktop than KDE if you're new, you should keep a command line only server, it'll help you get accustomed to executing commands in terminal. Good luck.

Re: linux boot

attempt4: i formated my 250gb clean, installed xp..... put in the ubuntu disk, installed it gave me the sliding option of how much space to give to ubuntu and xp, gave ubuntu 70gb rest to xp,... installation went smoothly, restart'd Grub told me there are 2 OS,, so now every thing is now fine....... all is sorted!!!!!

Now a question: why did i have so many problems trying to install xp and ubuntu on two partitions of the same drive???????

That's because you are doing it for the first or second time; after you gain some experience, it will work like a breeze
