the skinny on ubuntu 64 bit

I'm a first time linux user, considering installing ubuntu linux. I have an AMD athlon 64 proc, and so I am wondering if I should install the 64 bit ubuntu or the regular one... my concern is whether I will have trouble finding 64 bit driver support? I looked and saw ATI has 64 bit linux drivers, but i'm not sure how widespread they are?
