i'm currently d/ling knoppix live and ubuntu live to hopefully be able to retrieve some data off of a friend's laptop i'm fixing. now my question is, will i be able to network the laptop to my network here at home in able to retrieve the data?

for the details (i don't want to start 2 threads of the same thing), whenever i try to boot up the laptop, i get an "unmountable_bood_volume" blue screen, so i thought, taking the drive out and putting it inside an external enclosure would allow me to extract the data, but it didn't. it appears that the partition on the laptop has been deleted so on my machine windows, recognizes the laptop drive as a "RAW" partition and "0 bytes" on the drive. but i'm pretty sure that since the machine still tries to boot into windows, that the data on the drive is still there.

i've seen this done before, but the data was put on a flash drive, not transfered over a network.

you mean "unmountable_boot_volume" ?

if so, google unmountable_boot_volume, and you might be able to fix the booting problem on the problem system.

anyway, since you can do that, and you cannot get the system to boot into Windows, you might want to try recovering the data off the laptop's drive by using data recovery program within one of a working Windows system?
you'll need to locate a data recovery program that can do the works with an external drive?

you might not be able to network the two computer systems, the Linux's and the dead (or corrupted partition of filesystem) Windows.


sorry, you want to run the Linux live CD under the problem system. but anyway, you might want to consider using a Bart's PE boot CD.

get a data recovery program plugin, and then boot the problem system with the CD and run the program under the Bart's PE.

sorry for the typo, yes, it's boot, not bood

after looking at MSFT's website, i remembered something i did not mention. i already tried to do the windows recovery, but it didn't work. reason for it, is because the machine is a Dell, and apparently, Dell placed an administrator password, preventing me from continuing the recovery process.

i'm looking all over the place to get this thing networked, but i'm not coming to any results. it might also help if the version of knoppix i d/led was in english or even spanish .

and yes, i'm running the live disc on the laptop (corruped machine), not any other machine

oh yea, i tried to copy the information over to my flash drive, but it wouldn't let me, it gave me an error (and since it's in german, i don't know what it says) my guess is that i have to unlock my flash drive before i can copy anything onto it?

i forgot about this earlier... you might also want to create a all sectors 1:1 image of the problem drive/partition and try recovering the needed files using the disk/partition imaging program's image or partition explorer.

this is all depends... you might be able to get all the files back easier than you think, and you can do it in any working Windows system. you need a lot of free hard drive space on a network machine or some of the empty CDs/DVDs, and a disk/partition imaging program that also has an ability to view and export the files from the image file(s).

that's one thing i don't have alot of is space. the amount of data to be recovered is about 40Gb, and on my machine, i have appx. 25Gb free total. i will have to use my sister's machine to finish the data transfer.

depending on the program you are using... if you happen to have Paragon Drive Backup,
when the Drive Backup works in the sector-to-sector copying mode, it bypasses the analysis of used partitioning scheme, file system types and file system consistency of all partitions. it saves all sectors to the image. however, the use of the compression function will reduce the image size.

yea...that's the thing, i don't have Paragon Drive Backup. if it happens to be freeware, where can i find it, or where can i purchase it. or is there another program like it that will do the same thing? I have partition magic 7.0, but i don't think it will do anything near compared to what Paragon Drive Backup program does according to what you have said.

i did mention that you need to use a disk/partition imaging program...
partition magic 7.0 is not a disk/partition imaging program. it cannot make a disk/partition image, i'm sure if it can export the files after its copy disk operation either. i guess i'm out of an idea to help you.

well, i know you've been helping me the best you can, and i appreciate it.

the version of knoppix i have can view all the files that are on the hard drive, i just need to transfer them onto a working windows machine before i format the drive.

the dysfunctional drive is NTFS free

No, Samba is not a distribution, but instead an implementation of compatibility layer with Microsoft's SMB networking protocol

lol....all of the above! . i'll have to use my space on my rig, and anything that doesnt fit will go on my sister's rig.
