Dell released their Latitude X1 series notebooks this week which is based on the new Intel 915GMS chipset, and runs the Intel 733 1.1 Ghz Pentium M processor. The M 733 has been out a while for Tablets, and lately they've seen runs in some name brand notebooks. Now, you might scoff at first (1.1 Ghz?!?), but for those that don't know, these are the Ultra Low Voltage (UVL) Centrino processors. How low? In comparision a regular Pentium M 755 (2Ghz Centrino) uses about 21 watts of power. A ULV Pentium M processor uses 5 watts. Yes.. you read that right.. 5 watts! What does that mean? It means you'd get about 6 hours of battery life with one of these babies, and that's without the spare battery.

What's just as interesting is that it's actually made by Samsung. In fact, the Latitude X1 is identical, or rather IS the Samsung Q30, although Dell has changed the specs a bit. They've increased the capability of the laptop (or rather raised the headroom on it) by increasing the size of the max hard drive to 60GB from 40GB (or was that 30?), and have included BlueTooth as standard.

While you won't be gaming on this thing anytime soon, the fact that this is a full fledged laptop with dvd burner, 12" WXGA widescreen LCD, has wireless networking, built in SD/CF reader, and wieghs only 2.5 lbs... it makes it hard to pass up.

Now I remember where I read that Sony ULV system review. Forgot about that.

Although, now that the ones based on the 915GMS chipsets are out, like the Dell X1, I'd rather get them instead. The Sony one was impressive, but when you compare the 855GME chipset that Sony used vs the 915GMS chipset based ones you'll see why I like it. DDR2, and SATA support in a ULV system? Too nutz. At the moment though, I don't believe any of the 915GMS laptops are using the SATA support yet, which is a shame. When the do though.. that'll be sweet.
