PCMCIA Graphic Cards
Did you know that PCMCIA Graphic Cards have been made in the past,
Ive only been able to find 2
1. A crappy 4MB PCMCIA Graphic card and
2. A 128MB PCMCIA Graphic Card which is now discontinued.
Wouldnt it be great if manafctures like ATI made PCMCIA 3D cards
Itd be great to get an ATI X800 256MB PCMCIA Version that anyone could use, Not that itd ever happen though (Still nice to dream!)

you wouldnt want to put a chip like the x800 on there...not enough power or bandwith through that port. still...you could put cards more like the pci versions they still make today and it would be a great step up from what most laptops use.

Now when you say cards that are better than what most laptops use today please tell me where?!
Ive got a Radeon Mobility 9700 128MB x8 Card, now if you can tell me where I can get an even better graphics card that I could put in my laptop, then I would love to know where.

This goes back to the same thing that has been posted previously. Laptop video cards are EXTREMELY proprietary; they are developed by the company that built\sold you your computer and a technology vendor they partner with. It's not a generic standard like AGP or PCI where you can just go out and buy any card; for laptops it has to be a card made by your computer manufacturer and their vendor. If they don't have an upgrade past the 9700 then there isn't much that can be done. Right now Dell hogged up all the 9800 Mobility stock from ATi (*cough*) so it's very difficult for other manufacturers to develop that particular product; plus the footprint is larger than the 9700 which would make it difficult to fit in other notebooks originally designed just for the 9600\9700.
As for PCMCIA video cards there just isn't enough power or bandwidth as Nacht stated; although there have been talks about USB 2.0 video cards that would be ideal for mobile systems where you cannot upgrade the graphics card (although I have yet to see one).

i do think PCMCIA gfx cards would be great for some though...
some laptops have integrated gfx with shared memory and such. now if the user even had the option to use something like a geforce3 or 4 in a PCMCIA solution (both come in pci forms, and could be powered over that bus) it would be great. the only remaining problem would be heat dissipation...which i dont even know how they would start on that.

DJ I NEED YOU TO TELL ME WHERE TO GET ONE!
You have no idea how much I need one of those.
Okay so basically I have a Thinkpad 600x and it does everything I want with exception to a very few things. Ragnarok, and Stepmania. Neither requires much power (both ran super well on a Voodoo 3 2000 PCI) so I really REALLY need to know where to get one of these DJ. Can you tell me where to find it? Link perhaps?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE!

yeah i think so. but the memory size REALLY doesnt matter. its the speed of the chip that you'll need to be worrying about.

if you look, it has a couple of different models.
and why do you need a 128mb version? I'm serious, with the power you get out of those cards, you wont EVER need 128mb of vmem.

power, you think these cards have power. it has 64mb of shared memory and because its shared i can never get a descent frame rate. And i still cant find the 128mb Pcmcia version.
