For 2000$ you'll have a nice laptop mate. My personal experience:

Don't get a sony Vaio, hell they are nice but you pay for the look.
Get at least 512MB ram. 1024 even better.
Internal Wifi should be included in any new laptop.
If possible don't get integrated video chip like Intel or Sis. Get a radeon mobility 9000 or higher, or at least an nVidia chipset.

The Centrino processors are good and so is the battery life.
the P4 with HT are extremely fast but a litlle more expensive.
I think a 40gig hardisk should be enough for a portable (but try to get atleast a 5400RMP disk or higher)

The screen, personally i have SXGA with a max resolution of 1400x1050 which is excellent for me altough higher can be nice. Nowadays portables come out with a widescreen but I think priceses are still high.

An maybe you should get at least a year warranty.

Maybe you should check out pricewatch.com and select notebooks and the the 2000$ index. you'll get a list that compares most notebooks.

Hope that helps you a litlle further.

Also, contact the bookstore or computer shop at the college or university where he'll be attending. They will no doubt have a recommendation or requirements of some sort.
