Need Toshiba P205D-S7802 Windows Vista Home Premium Version (32 Bit) Recovery Disk.

My friend dropped his Lap Top in Iraq and, for whatever reason, it stopped working. By "it stopped working" I mean it tries to load, and ends up just going back to the initial splash screen, then back to the Windows loading screen, then back to the initial screen etc. ad nauseum infinitum. He called Toshiba and they said he would need a recovery disk. I have been poking around Google looking for a burnable recovery image to no effect. I was wondering if anyone knows where I may be able to find one for the given model, or if any old Satellite recovery image will do. Thanks.

First up, welcome to the forums.

There might be an easier way to do this. Since it makes it to the Windows loading screen (and past the bios post screen), have you tried recovering from recovery partition? Usually for Toshiba laptops you hold down (or keep tapping) the 0 (zero) key while you power the system up, and it will launch the recovery manager. Just be aware that in most cases you will see the Windows load screen, however most times this is the recovery software being accessed, so let it go through a bit. If it doesn't boot to it try again, or call Toshiba as it might be different for that laptop.

As for getting the discs, your best bet is to get the from Toshiba directly (and no, don't use another Toshiba laptop recovery CD). There is also a Vista cdkey on the bottom of the laptop, so if you can get a hold of a Vista 32bit OS install disc you can use it to reinstall the OS. Doesn't matter if it's for Basic, Premium, or whatever as all the 32bit versions of Vista are on the same disc. Just punchin the key, and the installer automatically installs the version for the key you inputted. The 2 main differences here is that you will need to download all the necessary drivers yourself from Toshibas website for the laptop, and you will need to activate that key once you're up and running, whereas with the Toshiba image that was there, the key used was their bulk license key (by license they have to include a key sticker when they sell the laptop.. that's why it's there, but they never use it, so it's still useable).

BTW, if you are able to get the recovery parition working, and are able to get Windows up and running again, within Windows you will see an option for making the recovery media. Now would be a good time to create them just incase your friend ever needs to replace the hard drive.

Thanks for the welcome and tips. I tried the recovery option earlier but it said that the error was unrecoverable. I'll deliver him the bad news that he's going to have to wait for them to send the recovery disk.

Toshiba's line of thinking is that some of the files on the drive are corrupt, that the partition on the hard drive is bad, and/or that there are some physical errors. Their "easy" solution is to reinstall using the DVD since it will wipe the disk, hopefully correcting the errors. If it doesn't the next thing they'll suggest is replacing the hard drive. It's quite possible that the hard drive is physically damaged (since the laptop was dropped that'd be my first impression), so not only would you need to reinstall the OS, but you may need to replace the hard drive too. 'Course, if the laptop is under warranty, forgo all the fuss, call Toshiba back up, and have them fix it.

In the mean time, while he's waiting for the replacement disc/s, you could try running some software to repair the partition on your own. I can't give you a direct link (as the disc uses the software under questionable terms), but do a search for something called "Hiren's Boot CD". Latest version is 9.9, but any version above 9.1 will work just fine. On that disc under "Hard Disc Tools" is a program called HDD Regenerator that might be worth a try. Also, as of 9.8 Hiren has included a miniPE of Windows XP. The reason I mention this is that running a chkdsk from another source, such as a bootdisk, can turn in better results while trying to fix partitions and errors vs running it from within the installed Windows (which can in fact screw up a system).

Give that a try first, and let me know how it goes.
