Lance Armstrong HP L2000 series laptop USB issues

I have for the past two hours tried in vane to find the root cause of a faliure of the USB ports on this hand me down lappy. I went to the support site and checked the read me and FAQ and tried the following:
uninstalled the USB HOST controller and associated hub in control panel and rebooted. the OS XPSP3 reinstalls the software and all seems well, but the mouse wont even work on any hub.
A meter indicates that the ports are okay, and the power properties are correctly set so they wont power off.
I addition, I tried the "ah hell why not read the instructions" approach and used the driver recovery tool with no change in the present problem.
The system is still not recognizing the mouse, powered or unpowered and listing as an unknown device with no other indication that anything is amiss.
Now this lappy has lived a charmed life, sitting in a doctors office for quite a few years, but it is still okay.
any other suggestions, save using a powered hub in the near future?

Re: Lance Armstrong HP L2000 series laptop USB issues

since it indicates the mouse as an unknown device, it looks like somethings is missing in the driver database... maybe it's a crippled install of XP... i've seen cracked editions of XP that install only the essentials for slow rigs... the driver database is almost totally empty in those cases...

maybe it's not a cracked edition, but worth checking the driver database... do this by trying to install a new device manually... it will show all the available drivers that XP has... if the list is pretty short or has no devices whatsoever, i would say the database is corrupted or non existing... a reinstall of XP from scratch would be a wise thing to do in that case...

Re: Lance Armstrong HP L2000 series laptop USB issues

manual install was my next step, and I tried in vane to find the USB.inf, it seems my search is flawed from the beginning, should I be looking in the system 32 foldker?

Re: Lance Armstrong HP L2000 series laptop USB issues

well, all the installed drivers are in system32/drivers... the correct .sys files used for the drivers could be found under the hardware properties window... it will list all the .sys files that those USB ports use... the .ini files are just files that say how the .sys driver files should be configured and where they should be copied, so you woun't find any .inf files in the drivers folder...

i don't think it's the USB ports themselves or their drivers that are the issue here... even if you install and reinstall the drivers for the USB ports, i don't think it will make any difference...

try finding the drivers for the USB mouse you use, extract the files if its a packed .exe or .zip/.rar archive, and install the driver manually... wort trying... if it doesn't work, than i think there is something seriously wrong with that XP installation you have.... :S

Re: Lance Armstrong HP L2000 series laptop USB issues

yeah..did the mouse and powered hub thing, windows consistently recognizes them as unknown devices. My next ordeal is to just restore the OS and see what happens then.

Hey Jeff - just checking to make sure - but have you tried any other USB device directly into the USB ports on the laptop itself? Something like a flash drive, an Ipod, a USB keyboard, external USB hard drive, anything else at all?

Re: Lance Armstrong HP L2000 series laptop USB issues

i think that the driver database of that XP installation is somehow corrupted... or it has some missing registry entries so it doesn't recognize what kind of device is plugged into the USB ports... :S... either way, i think a clean install of XP would fix the problem...

Re: Lance Armstrong HP L2000 series laptop USB issues

no joy, I am thinking the software is the problem, bringing it up past service pack 3 didnt seem to be the issue, maybe it does have a crappy mobo...

Or something in the BIOS Jeff as I mentioned. Check for Legacy settings sometimes they need to be on or off.
