I just got a Dell inspiron 5100, it has a built in 56k modem. I tried playing unreal tournament tonight, and it wasn't peak hours. But my pings would go anywhere from 200 to 3000. Can anyone help me with this?

what's your PC spec?? and do you have all the latest drivers installed??

P4 2.4ghz 512mb ram 32mb mobility radeon 7500 conexant integrated 56k modem. i get stable pings on my desktop and it's a low slower than this computer. my driver is dated 3/18 2003, i'm not sure if its the current one for the modem though.

One thing that might be happening is that the Modem is a Win modem, no onboard DSP, so its using your CPU to do that and if the CPU is being taxed its not going to give you stable ping. Your desktop probably has a modem that does have a DSP or something similar and isn't as reliant on the CPU

try a external modem for you labtop but make sure it not another win modem

Thanks for the info guys. So with this winmodem, it taxes my 2.4ghz that much? but i think i have an external modem laying around somewhere, i'll see if i can find it.
