notebook under 1600$
Hi, i am looking for a GOOD NEW notebook to buy in a week or 2. I never had one, just read some reviews etc.
1. it need to be quality one, at least for 2 years of usability, so no noname like gateway.
2. the price should not be over 1600$ in any case(or +/- 50$), but if anyone knows about some "rebates" or "actions" going on in some of the HW Firms recently, i can use it (or rebates using electronic shops in USA, New-Jersey location)
3. it need to be Intel Centrino Solution, 1.3GHz is enough(or at least banias cpu in it, w/o wi-fi), a redesigned notebook(I am not going to spare 1,6K for old design)
4. I do NOT need good graphics card(the last option for me), or at least no up-to date on...BUT some radeon7500 in it is a welcome choice if price can allow it(like in DELL)
5. It is not for gaming(so low on CPU and graphics card), 20GB hard disk is enough, 256MB ram but mandatory, DVD drive too(do not need recording driver), NO OS needed(but welcome), but typing/browsing/coding enhanced funcionality is welcome.
6. It should have some nice display, at least 15'' and 1024*768, not a hunt for a battery life(centrino is around 4-7hours so its enough and in my range)
thx for suggestion, after long search I have choosen IBM, because of quality, the best keyboard out there(rumours) and the image. IMB R series, 2722 -47U
i am thinking about toshiba too(but seems expensive), DELL and so on, MANY options, so help is welcome
thank you!

whatever you buy, just make sure its a MOBILE cpu, not a desktop version. i have a mobile XP 1900+ in my laptop and the fan doesnt turn on a single time in a windows session even if you play dvd/divx/svcd. games and heavy calculations make the fan turn on once in a while though

yeah, i don't know if you heard about Centrino solution(NEW intel banias cpu), but its a HELL of a mobile =)
it is just avaiable from March(big news), a great success by Indian-Intel developers...complete mobile solution, that's why I want it. No heat and MOBILITY redisign(I do not need P4 2GHz+ power on coding/browsing etc...)
but i do not need EXTRA mobility(like expensive subnotebooks or hunt-for-the lowest weight possible like IBM T series) for extra money, just simple good one notebook(I would use it at home too, on a desk)
with Intel centrino solution the choices are getting much more lower(so any AMD or Intel Celeron/P4/P4-M solutions are out), but still I am lost in like gazzillion options to choose from(I never had one notebook do not know what is important what is not)

Re: notebook under 1600$
1. I wouldnt call a gateway laptop a no name laptop, they make some of the most respected laptops in the industry and I have owned 2 of them. A 500Mhz Celeron based from a few years ago (which my cousin dropped and broke the LCD and CD-ROM Drive on with ho warrant left after several years) and now my P4 2.2 with the mobility 9000, dvd-rom, 30GB HD, 512MB DDR RAM. So far I have no complaints about this laptop whatsoever.
You can get the laptop that I have or one similar to it for fairly cheap
Ok here is the real question. Why do you want centrino without the wi-fi? What is the point to having a lower clocked CPU without the benefits of the rest of the centrino technology? and yes they do charge more for it so you are getting ripped off if you do that.
I configed a laptop off of gateway with most of the options that you wanted and this is the best price I can come up with
and shipping is included
Go to Gateways main site and click on the quote option on the left side and in that page enter this number
1167533
that should give you the price on the system and what i have it configured with

the 'Centrino' cpu is far more efficent than a P4-m and faster on a Mhz to Mhz comparison, doesn't create as much heat and doesn't eat the batteries. Centrino is only a brand name given to using th P-m, the chipset and the Intel Wi-Fi (currently the Wi-Fi is just a mini-PCI card on not what will eventually be the real; 'centrino' integrated solution). I would go for the P-M if getting a Laptop, BUT for a 'desktop replacment' that aint going to be do much more than be plugged into the wall and not moved around much the P4-m would be as cheaper choice, although you'll have to go to a lot higher Mhz to get the same general speed.
Mind : it would be nice if he/she replied to you

hmm now youve got me wondering
My P4-M gets around 4 hours of battery life and thats with the standard NiMH battery
I know the centrino thing is a brand name for now at least.
I got the P4-M for the fact that I could do things with it like a desktop buy on the go.
I play games, watch dvd's, read e-books, work on projects, and handle most of a companies ordering on it
I love my Gateway, and btw to the original poster
Gateway does carry the Centrino setups
