Help with Toshiba Satellite A200-TH7 (PSAE6C-TH70DC)

Hi everyone,

So I bought this laptop last October 20, 2007. And it came pre-installed with Windows Vista. I have to replace the OS with Windows XP as most of my school work requires me to test my applications in Windows XP.

I was successful in replacing the OS and I am quite happy with the laptop since I can play the latest games with no problems. I was playing Rainbow Six Vegas (with Toshiba's official driver) one time and it kept on giving me this Blue Screen of Death. So I decided to get the latest ATI drivers from the ATI website and apply the Mobility Modder to the driver. I successfully installed the modded driver without any problems.

Some time around last moth, around February 2008, there was this Windows Update that screwed my display driver up. I know it was a Windows Update because the fact that was the last thing the laptop did before it coughed up the problems.

After I did that update, my laptop has been shutting down for no reason. No Blue Screen of Death, no Red Screen of Death, no shutdown prompt, the laptop just simply shuts down like a TV pulled its plug from the outlet.

So I did my pre-inspections. I first checked out the RAM as most of my experiences with these kinds of blackout was RAM problems. I replaced the laptop's RAM with the one from my brother's laptop and it still shows the problem. I even tested the RAM that came pre-packed and that RAM is fine.

Then I moved on to the next hunch, hard-drive. Since most of the time, my laptop just shuts itself down during Windows XP's boot screen, I thought that it may have something to do with the hard-drive. But then again, my hunch was wrong. I tested and swapped hard-drives -same results, laptop keeps on shutting down for no reason.

It is then I went to diagnose my last hunch. The display driver. I tried to update the latest ATI driver (8.2) + Mobility Modder - still shows the same. But then I tested rolling back the drivers to the Toshiba Official ones. And to my surprise, it solved the problem.

Now that you read my situation(hopefully), I got a few questions:

1.) If you own the same laptop, do you have the same problem as I did? What's your OS, XP or Vista?

2.) Now that I can not play Rainbow Six Vegas anymore cause it gave me back that Blue Screen of Death, any suggestions on what to do aside from trying Vista?

This thing is kind of pissing me off a little bit that I can not play some games that I have because Toshiba rarely updates their drivers.

Thanks for any help provided.
