Laptop runs on battery power but not A/C power

Just like the title says. Battery charges just fine. Laptop runs just fine on battery power. I tried A/C power with no battery but laptop won't turn on. Battery does not charge while laptop is on. That could be because laptop is using battery power faster than battery is charging. Laptop was working just fine until this weekend. Saturday I shut it down and unplugged A/C adapter. Left, came home the next day, plugged it back in, started using it and noticed that the "battery charging light" was on and with in an hour the laptop shut down. Gateway 7422gx AMD 3400+ (2.21 GHz) 1G RAM Windows XP Home, SP 2 Hope ya can help, Ron

sounds like something in the charge controller is damaged. can you get a replacement notebook?

these sort of issues are hardware related and mostly unrelated to the actual computing parts.

the regulator that regulates the power going to the battery and system must be damaged if it will only charge when off.

No, this is my home laptop. Will what you said effect the laptop when battery is removed? The laptop will not run without the battery.

if the battery is removed, i dont think the laptop can get any power judging from how you explained everything.

if you want, you can try it.

also, does the battery charge fully when shut off?

there really isnt any way to fix this as the regulating circuit is a hardwired part of the motherboard and needs to be sent in for repair by the manufacturer or certified professional.

ok there goes the possibility that the battery is damaged,

if you can find someone who can repair that system that is your best bet as you said you cant get a replacement.

good luck, hope it goes well and Merry Christmas!
