Slave desktop to laptop

I know this is a weird question, but I'm tired of having two sets of information running between my desktop and my laptop, but I don't want to lose the 60 gig (I know it's not that much for some, but it's as much as I currently need) hard drive on my desktop.

I see that there's a way to slave a laptop hard drive to a desktop, but is there a way to slave a desktop to a laptop? Or is there at least a way to make them communicate quickly (networking is so insanely slow) so that it seems like they're the same machine? In order to do this, I also need to get rid of my monitor (it's a monster from the 20th century, and I can't fit my laptop on the desk with the monitor on there), so I'd have to be able to have full access to the desktop via my laptop.

Maybe the simpler question is, can I use my laptop monitor as the monitor for my desktop and then somehow make them communicate quickly enough that I feel like they're the same machine?

Something like that.

Thanks!

*edit: I figured out what I want. I want my tower to become a giant external hard drive (I figure I need the fans to cool the hard drives, there are actually two of them).

A friend told me to use remote desktop, and I think that should work just fine. I can always plug my husband's monitor in if I have to.

System Specs

unless you're doing crazy business, you don't need cooling for hard drives. you can get External drive enclosures (changes internal drive to external, very convenient) for relatively cheap... will plug in to USB2 , stuff like that.
