Laptop display problem - have a look

I even tried plugging in an external CRT monitor to the laptop but the display on the CRT looks the same. Could the inverter be the problem? Any suggestions?
Laptop is a Toshiba M30

My guess is your graphics card or mainboard is about to kick the bucket.

If it's possible to take a screenshot, you can lay the blame on the video card, which could possibly be caused by either the mobo or the power supply messing it up.

Save everything you need from it ASAP.
Update your video drivers.
Try funky things. For situations like this, i'd throw Knoppix into the mix. Burn it to a cd, and boot from it. If your display is good when you boot from it, you're looking at a software issue. If not , it's hardware.
