Question about laptop cooling

I just recently purchased an Acer laptop, and the hard drive gets pretty hot which I find strange because it's usually the video card that burns up the bottom of the notebook. This problem however make the notebook hot on both sides. I was just browsing around for a notebook cooler better than the one I have now and I stumbled upon this.

It's a notebook cooler that uses heat pipes. My question is has anyone ever used this type of thing? How effective is it? And is it worth getting?
