Blank screen when playing DVD movies

I am getting a blank screen on my notebook computer when I play DVD movies. I get sound ok, and if I point the cursor carefully on the title menu (which is blacked out) by watching when the cursor changes character, I can trigger menu commands. I have the same problem with any of several DVD player programs I have tried, so the problem would not seem to lie with the DVD player software. I tried updating the display drivers, but that made no difference. Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Have you made sure that you display settings is set for watching movies on the computer and not on an external monitor.

It can either be changed in display settings (maybe advanced) or maybe by using the special laptop key fn and some of the F keys.

Hope it might help!

Same suggestions that Gildon made, plus one more: what does it say for display type under Display Properties? If it says "Default" you might want to try changing your montior type to a standard "Digital Flat Panel" of the size your laptop screen is capable of, or at the very least change it to a "Plug and Play Monitor" type.

You can do both by updating your monitor display drivers, hit "No" to the Windows Update Search, hit "Install from a specific list or location", choose "Do not search....", if you want to install a "Plug and Play" type it should be listed here, or for the "Digital Flat Panel" type you would uncheck the "show compatible hardware", and from the "Standard Monitor Types" listing on the left side you should see "Digital Flat Panel (XXXX x XXXX) onthe right. Just choose the one for the laptops display type).
