Weird Laptop Keyboard Problem

My friend has a problem with her laptop keyboard. I am typing on it as I write this. This is what I get when I hold down shift and press the number keys, starting with the tilda and ending with 0.

ª!"·$%&/()=

also some keys like question marks do not work either, they display strange characters, the semi colon for example give me an N with a tilda over it. Anyone know what can be wrong or how to get the keys back to default.
She bought the laptop from Circuit City and it was a display unit, so she got 400$ off. But who knows what people who were playing with it did. Shes been using it for over a month now, and of course wasnt given a XP reinstallation disk, so reformatting will hopefully be the last resort. Thanks for your help!

System Specs

It's possible that the keyboard is set for wrong language or region in which she is using it. Take a look in the Windows Control Panel at the Regional and Language Options and the Keyboard control panels and see if they are set to English (US).

There also may be a way to remap keys (sorry - I'm not familiar with that though), or some special keyboard software is included on her particular lappy that may need attention...

it's obviously the keyboard setting is changed into spain (español)... you just simply change it into U.S keyboard setting... it's a relief that the keyboard button not change
"home" is "inicio", "end" is "fin"

have a happy day
