Thanks for the comments.

I can best explain that graininess this way: I made the mistake of having the original photos printed on matte paper. Due to that, when scanning the photos, the scanner picks that up and produces the 'awful' grainy appearance. If I'd have printed on glossy paper, I'm sure it would look much better.

Also, I should mention that the photo, itself, is about 30 years old. (Man, did I just give away my old age! )
