very active, but not a whole lot of work, he doesn't eat much, so he is ok if I go away for a weekend, but he loves to climb, and explore, so when I take him out of his cage, he won't be content being held or just sitting in one spot.

I had some friends who had chinchillas. They always made me think of miniature kangaroo with mouse characteristics.  Very cute!
