Hurt (by Johnny Cash)

JOHNNY CASH LYRICS

"Hurt"

I hurt myself today
To see if I still feel
I focus on the pain
The only thing that's real
The needle tears a hole
The old familiar sting
Try to kill it all away
But I remember everything

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

I wear this crown of thorns
Upon my liar's chair
Full of broken thoughts
I cannot repair
Beneath the stains of time
The feelings disappear
You are someone else
I am still right here

[Chorus:]
What have I become
My sweetest friend
Everyone I know goes away
In the end
And you could have it all
My empire of dirt
I will let you down
I will make you hurt

If I could start again
A million miles away
I would keep myself
I would find a way

Johnny covered it..
and changed a lyric to suit his taste, with Trent's permission of course, they were fast friends, and I heard the interview about Johnny Cash in Trents words, he admired Johnny Cash and Waylon Jennings, and the song could be said to be an "homage" to Johnny Cash really, ironic isnt it, that Johnny Cash would record this song on his 2002 album and also cover Personal Jesus as well, amazing in fact if you consider how the circle turns, and artists honor each other...
Apparently addiction knows no colour, no race, no sex, and no particuler age...
I enjoyed the song and it helps me to deal with addiction
I sponser children of drug addicts sometimes and they all are brothers and sisters by a common thread....and are all drawn together by it, whether they become addicts themselves or not..
I hope not...
I lost a good friend to HIV and addiction, a child prodigy, who played guitar and found that cocaine and crystal were more important than the flesh of his body, I hope his soul found peace, when I hear Johnny's version of this song, it takes me back to a time in my life when I could have made a very bad choice because my friend did as well....
To Franz Wilson....
may he rest in peace...
his Fender Stratocaster was buried with him and he hurts no more..

Well, I don't mean to be argumentative, but changing 'shit' to 'thorns' doesn't really take authorship of the song away from Trent. . .

I personally never forgave johnny Cash for what he did to this song

The video was even more "far fetched" with it's heavily patriotic theme, which i somehow doubt was Reznor's itnention.

Great song...in it's original incarnation though

Well, I like Johnny's version because I know it has a lot of personal meaning related to his own struggles, and heart is one thing that makes music work for me.

But, all in all, I agree that the song is an awesome, all time classic. . .some of the best lyrics ever.

I was 14 years old when I heard the downward spiral. Hurt was a song that really hit home with me at that age...raging hormones and shit...no offence to Johnny, but NIN own this song as far as I'm concerned.

as someone that is so much older than you, I can respect that...
but
Johnny was dopin long before trent could wipe his ass without supervision...
and they both came through it...
I hope Trent lives longer than Johnny did...

What does age have to do with anything?
