drive all night
old car and old shoes, I take them out for a spin and run from the blues
old streets and amber lights to guide my way, a pefect end to a sleepy day.
tree covered streets that hide the moon and stars so I can see
the brilliant yellow and brown boughs of the willows in this strange dark canopy
signal lights go from red to green and I push the car gently along and I dream
past the open window vignettes and silent amateur movie scenes.
music keeps me in moving in time with the beat
the manhole covers and potholes that shine in the street
lifeless orb that glows in the sky above
casts a quiet blue patina on two people in the park making love.
Roll past the cop sleeping in the front seat of his old patrol car.
past the two women sleeping on the curb in front of the steps of a bar.
a tattooed girl in a short skirt leans against the cab of a truck.
smoking a cigarette I can see her face when she drags on the butt
young man walking down the street with chinese in his hands.
turns into the dark stairwell of the old hotel and is gone again.
the wind blows the paper off the bench in the park
and the homeless man grabs it and dissolves in the dark.
the figure of a woman leaning against the tree by the store
falls to the soft green grass beneath her and covers her face and crys some more.
I stopped and offered my concern
and she rose with a mascara covered crying smile so I silently turned
the used and bruised and the soiled and the forgotten
find the niches and the corners and the ripe and the rotten
my comfort is the pale and purple radio light
and I find my peace and my place...and drive all night.

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bedsitter people look back and lament
Another day's useless energy spent.
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one,
Lonely man cries for love and has none.
New mother picks up and suckles her son,
Senior citizens wish they were young.
Cold hearted orb that rules the night,
Removes the colors from our sight.
Red is grey and yellow white,
But we decide which is right.
And which is an illusion?
Pinprick holes in a colourless sky,
Let insipid figures of light pass by,
The mighty light of ten thousand suns,
Challenges infinity and is soon gone.
Night time, to some a brief interlude,
To others the fear of solitude.
Brave Helios wake up your steads,
Bring the warmth the countryside needs.
(days of future passed)
