Dream theater are also probably the most underrated rock band ever, there is no justice in life sometimes, they should all be household names by now - they would eat a band like metallica for breakfast and spit them out. At least they never sold out to popularity, and they could have.

because they are not mainstream usually peaks my interest. I have heard lots of influences in popular music today, including the chaps that fighting the foo, but DT is genuinely different in many respects, including the compositons, you cant draw direct correlations with anything you may have heard before, etc. Now with the Foo Fighters you can hear Crosby Stills and Nash, Niel Young, etc. its all over it. DT does fill a niche of sorts and should remain beyond the pale of the mainstream.
