fort minor - red to black

you guys that know me know i love my rap music, i like it in many forms such as crunk, hardcore/gangsta, alternative, reggaeton, chopped and screwed (but usually crunk). fort minor has a seriously solid album out and lot of rapper backing them. this song applies to lotta peeps we know even ourselves. i don't know but simply reading the lyrics may not have the same effect, but those 2 guys from styles of beyond have sick lyrical ability. their flow made it stand out a lot more.

I had a friend named Victor
The two of us used to hang every single day
And it seemed like overnight
That his whole life just changed
I know when his mom and dad broke up
It didn't make sense
But i know that his dad was a drunk
And he gambled away the rent

Pretty soon Vic was seeing red
Pissed off and instead
Hed drink every night until he passed out
And then hed do it all again
The whole time spelling on the outside
To cover the pain
But on the inside
All he was trying to do was get away

Trying to get away
Let the pain of yesterday
Go slipping through the cracks

Yo, Funny how things change color
Than fade to another shade
When you had it made it was all good
But now look just another day
It was so fresh
It was so clean
Never saw it gone
One, two, three
Lights out, which way to turn
Can't get a grip
All alone in a big white house
Every day gets worse
And you just curse until your head bursts
And it hurts so bad she left
You think to yourself
I shoulda thought of that one first
No family, no kids

Cant accept what you did
Now you wanna run away
But you can't
Cause the past comes back again

Slippin through the cracks
Have a little shack
Go to bed half dead
What about rent
Why does every cent gotta be a bet
Whens it gonna end
Oh my god we dont got a penny left
My moms gotta find a way
To get a job, out of debt, out of dodge
Out of breath, out of this big problem
My pops wanna get away from the pain
In a better place in his brain
But the medication he takes
Makes him wasted
So sick if hes gonna faint
The good lord would come take him
Im shaking now wake up
You son of a bitch!

He's trying to get away
Let the pain of yesterday
Go slipping through the cracks
Hiding himself away
Watching all the memories fade away
From red to black

He's trying to get away
Let the pain of yesterday
Go slipping through the cracks
Hiding himself away
Watching all the memories fade away
From red to black

Slipping through the cracks
Slipping through the cracks
Slipping through the cracks

if your going to find poets on the street, then it should be somebody that demostrates some flexibility and creativity, just so tired of pole dancing strippers and players grabbing their johnsons and talking about riding dirty......pleasseeeeeeeeeee
What about the situation at home, struggling in a racist society and overcoming adversity rather than getting over on whitey....just looking for real talent.
And how about something positive sometime.....the music industry would have believe that people of color can only achieve anything by being a rapper, a gangsta or an NBA star...
just aint so..I want to hear something that inspires rather than glorifies...

ooo i know 75% of rappers out there are BS i agree, its just fun to listen to. fort minor is quite alternative due to shinoda. the whole album is built around a tough alliance of alternative rappers and jay-z.

if you like stuff from the streets, check out papoose. i was going to post his song "take it to the guns", but its pretty violent. its pure hardcore street shit from harlem. i actually have mixtapes straight off the streets from harlem, my bro was there a few months ago and bought em

but i would have to agree... im not really into rap and stuff..
but this album of Fort Minor really took my attention. I really like it.
I first couldnt stand Limp Bizkit, but after hearing it for a few times, i even start to like that. I find the lyrics really good. And i guess my taste is chaning, i'm beginning to appriciate music with a beat.
The normal songs that come out nowadays are going more about the melody then the text, and i find that wrong.. I like the old music, where melody and text was pretty good mixed. That was just very good...
But some bands still produce some very good music, and this is certainly one of em.

I went through this with my son and his TUPAC fascination, I wanted to prove to him that he was just an artist and nothing more, regardless, like so many before him, he was objectified by the music industry and a great deal of good work is smothered in the industry crap and labeled by the industry just to sell the music and put some 22 inch rims on a fools ride.
What about the music, what about the message...

i don't want to talk about pac what he has done, it gets too political in a way IMO.

but fort minor has been a bit overlooked, and a lot of people dont realize that because these guys a white/japanese that they are pretty solid rappers also. unfortunately they are not labeled "rappers" by many since they don't cut vegetables on a counter in their music video with a black girl and have grills (aka platinum teeth) *cough* PAUL WALL*.

Fort minor - Keniji

I like this one too.. not your usual rap.
Some of the parts are old people speaking (maybe his parent & granparents?)

My father came from Japan in 1905
He was 15 when he immigrated from Japan
He, he... he worked until he was able to buy this patch
And build a store

Let me tell you the story in the form of a dream,
I don't know why I have to tell it but I know what it means,
Close your eyes, just picture the scene,
As I paint it for you, it was World War II,
When this man named Kenji woke up,
Ken was not a soldier,
He was just a man with a family who owned a store in LA,
That day, he crawled out of bed like he always did,
Bacon and eggs with wife and kids,
He lived on the second floor of a little store he rented,
He moved to LA from Japan,
They called him 'Immigrant,'
In Japanese, he'd say he was called "Issei,"
That meant 'First Generation In The United States,'
When everyone was afraid of the Germans, afraid of the Japs,
But most of all afraid of a homeland attack,
And that morning when Ken went out on the doormat,
His world went black 'cause,
Right there; front page news,
Three weeks before 1942,
"Pearl Harbour's Been Bombed And The Japs Are Comin',"
Pictures of soldiers dyin' and runnin',
Ken knew what it would lead to,
Just like he guessed, the President said,
"The evil Japanese in our home country will be locked away,"
They gave Ken a couple of days,
To get his whole life packed in two bags,
Just two bags - couldn't even pack his clothes,
Some folks didn't even have a suitcase to pack anything in,
So two trash bags was all they gave them,
When the kids asked "Mom, where are we goin'?"
Nobody even knew what to say to them,
Ken didn't wanna lie, he said "The U.S. is lookin' for spies,
So we have to live in a place called Manzanar,
Where a lot of Japanese people are,"
Stop it, don't look at the gunmen,
You don't wanna get the soldiers wonderin',
If you're gonna run or not,
'Cause if you run then you might get shot,
Other than that try not to think about it,
Try not to worry 'bout it bein' so crowded,
Someday we'll get out, someday, someday...

As soon as war broke out
The G.I. came and they just come to the house and
"You have to come"
"All the Japanese have to go"
They took Mr. Nii
People didn't understand
Why did they have to take him
Because he is just innocent labourer

So now they're in a town with soldiers surroundin' them,
Every day, every night look down at them,
From watch towers up on the wall,
Ken couldn't really hate them at all;
They were just doin' their job and,
He wasn't gonna make any problems,
He had a little garden with vegetables and fruits,
That he gave to the troops in a basket his wife made,
But in the back of his mind, he wanted his families life saved,
Prisoners of war in their own damn country,
What for?
Time passed in the prison town,
He wondered if he'd live it down if and when they were free,
The only way out was joinin' the army,
And supposedly, some men went out for the army - signed on,
And ended up flyin' to Japan with a bomb,
That 15 kiloton blast put an end to the war pretty fast,
Two cities were blown to bits; the end of the war came quick,
Ken got out, big hopes of a normal life with his kids and his wife,
But, when they got back to their home,
And what they saw made them feel so alone,
These people had trashed every room,
Smashed in the windows and bashed in the doors,
Written on the walls and the floor,
"Japs not welcome anymore."
And Kenji dropped both of his bags at his sides and just stood outside,
He looked at his wife without words to say,
She looked back at him, wiped the tears away,
And said "Someday we'll be okay, someday,"
Now the names have been changed, but the story's true,
My family was locked up back in '42,
My family was there where it was dark and damp,
And they called it an internment camp

When we first got back from camp... uhh
It was... pretty... pretty bad

I, I remember my husband said
"Are we gonna stay 'til last?"
Then my husband died before they close the camp.

I absolutely effing hate rap music but those lyrics are deep. I may have to look into some ft. minor. I am very impressed, I was sick of the usual bitch and hoe music. This is great.
