new maxtor drive dead already??
ok, so i bought a new (oem) maxtor fireball 3 20gb 5400rpm drive for my brother's pc, it installed and worked without a hitch for 2 months, then without warning, it just dropped dead yesterday, in the system it was in it just hangs on <detecting primary master> at post, if i go into the bios and hit <f3: detect ide drives> it detects it no problem, but as a 40(!)Gb drive, then just hangs again during post.
so i pulled it out of that machine and stuck it in mine, and that just says <IDE DISK FAIL> then disables the drive...
any thoughts on this before i RMA the bitch??? it seems a bit strange how this happened, considering it was working fine until that last reboot...

You might have the jumpers on it wrong, check the manual or the sticker on the top to make sure you have it set to use the right amount of hard drive heads for 30gb and not 40gb...

Well, thats the only thing that I can think of about the hard drive... because it would probably do the same things at post if the jumpers were wrong, e.g. not boot, appear to be 40gb... fail, etc. If you are sure about the jumpers and all, I would recommend RMA...

yeah, but as i said the drive was working beautifully until it just died for no apparent reason, noone had touched the drive itself, as my bro is scared of things like that and likes to just leave it to me... i figured id have to RMA it but i just had to check and see if anyone knew of similar issues or whatever to save the hassle....

Well, it is a mediocre drive... Also. You might want to try the maxtor disk that came with your drive. If you don't have one I can zip up a copy for you.
wow...1100th post

yeah, i know its not the best drive performance-wise, but it was cheap and it was for my brother's pc, he doesnt do much more than playing on emulators, word processing, stuff like that... i would try the maxtor disk (i do have one, but thanks anyways) but i cant get beyond post with the drive installed, it either hangs the system (in my bro's comp) or disables the channel ie. says pri slave: not installed (in mine).

Try booting without the hard drive installed. If it posts then most likely there is something wrong with the IDE cable. Try that. And if it posts then change the IDE cable.
