High Pitched Noise

Ok, lately I've been noticing that at times my monitor (Samsung Syncmaster 1100DF) has been making a sort of high pitched whine while doing stuff. For example, last night it was making it while i was running 3d mark 01, 03 and 05. It isn't very loud, but it is noticeable. It seems to be coming from inside the cabinet. Anyone got any ideas why it's doing this?

A high pitch sound is usually power related... Might be damaged your screen after years of use.

It's usually an indication that the monitor is on its way out.

yeah, that's what I didn't want to say.

on the other hand, babies often make high pitched whining noises and very often keep going for years........

He just bought the monitor.

It definitely is a power related problem. As a matter of fact my 2001 does it when it's been powered back up after not being on for awhile.

You also might look at what else is plugged in to it's outlet. If it doesn't happen all the time it could just be interference.

I think it is likely a loose coil or transformer winding - does it change or disappear if you change resolutions or refresh rates?

Here's an idea too - really - try this - put one hand on each of the sides of your monitor toward the back end and low - toward the base of your monitor where the main board of the monitor is resting inside, and squeeze. Does the squeal disappear or change?

Also make sure to use an earthed socket. But expect to have the monitor replaced. Monitor warranties are usually pretty good.

Right now i got the monitor, the tower, the speakers, the modem and my printer all on a surge protector. Oh yeah, in the other outlet, there's my glade plugin and my clock radio that's plugged into that.

Ok, I just changed the resolution from 1280 x 1024 / 85 to 800 x 600 / 60. Initially it wasn't making any noise, but when i touched the cabinet and it started shaking a little, then the whine started. So i placed one hand under and the pitch grew louder, but when i placed my other hand at the other side, it stopped. Tried this a few times and the same thing happened. Btw, I haven't manually turned off the monitor in a while; always allowed windows to do so when it shuts down.

So what do I do? Get it replaced? Do I go through newegg or samsung?

What you are doing by pressing on the case is slightly altering the mechanical stress on the board upon which the ringing coil/transformer is mounted - thereby changing the mechanical stresses on the coils of wire in the device. This issue should be covered under warranty.

I would contact Newegg first - your money has already spoken to them - you haven't had it very long and they don't expressly say in the advertisement for the unit online that the warranty is handled strictly by the manufacturer.

Well I'll contact newegg as soon as I get a chance. I dunno when I'll be able to get it replaced though, because they seem to be out of the black model.
