is my HDD dead?

this is turning in to a night mare.

I got a new PSU. (if you've been following the story you'll know why)


everything seemed to come on, but when I pluged the power in to my new 250GB maxtor HD, the PC wont even power up.



But pull the lead out of the HD however, and the PC works again.



Is my HDD Dead?

Did it die when my old PSU went bang!???

thing is, the HDD didn't work when I tryed it in my brothers PC, and that was befour the PSU in My computer went bang.

was ever working at any point? with the information you've given so far, i'm thinking it's:

1. your current PSU can't handle having the extra HDD, plugged in

2. if it's brand new (before your troubles began) your HDD needs to be formatted.

now, this second point leads me to a question. when it didn't work in your brother's computer, did you look in the BIOS and see if the BIOS recognized the HDD? And is it an IDE or SATA HDD?

(sorry for asking these questions if you've already answered them, but i haven't seen your other thread as to why this originally happened).

my new PSU is a 350Watt hiper with 22Amps on the 12volt rail.

the HD worked up intill I took it out and tryed it in my brothers PC (that's when his PC wouldn't even power up, with my HD conected.)

He pulled my HD out again, and his PC powered on as per normal.

I then put my HD back in MY PC, and that's when my old 300watt PSU bluw up, it litrely happened as soon as I pluged the computer in.

So I got my self a new PSU, but sadly, when my HD is connected up to the power lead, the PC will not even power on. Disconect the power lead however, and the PC fires up as normal.

sorry to have to say this but, it looks like you need a new HD...

i've got an Amp/volt meater, tester.

Anyway I can use it to test my HD?

any really tec clever people in here who know what readings to look for, and witch pins (power or otherwise) I need to test.

now did his computer not power up at all, or it did for a split seconds and then shut down? I'm asking because it would make a major difference as to it being bad or not. When you did this step on your brother's computer and yours, did you make sure that the jumper on the HDD is actually set to slave or master (depending on the way the drive is set up). Reason i ask is because if it's set to slave, and it's supposed to master or vice-versa, then it's not going (in most cases) to make the system boot

The power LED flashed once. but the computer never actualy powered on as such.

And when the button was pressed a second time, I don't think the power LED flashed at all.


The jumper was set to master. but when I got it from the shop, the jumper was set to 'CS Enabled' what ever that means.

it also has a setting that says ' Cap Limit' I don't know what that means either.

it would be best if you'll return your HD to where you bought it...
that is if it's still under warranty

I've only had it a week,... it broke on day two.

question is, Did the PSU kill the Hard Disk, or did the Hard Disk kill the PSU?


Will they let me take it back? because of this.?

What should I tell them?, more importantly, What ' shouldn't ' I tell them.

to return it, tell them it was DOA.

As for volt testing it, there are some posts on the bottom where the ribbon cable connects(a 12v, 3v, and 1.5v i think)...you could check those

theres no way they would know that I had installed windows? then F-disk deleted it. ?

just tell them it kinda worked, partial install-whatever, then took a dump & everything else in your comp is fine.

Mostly sure that the PSU killed it by suppliying bad power before it goes dead itself..
